I know this is a little late, sorry. I have a lot of vita news comming in soon.

When cornered on the topic in a press conference for European and Australian journalists, a Sony executive revealed that the PS Vita will be region-free, meaning games released for any locale in the world will be playable in a PS Vita sold anywhere else in the world. Michael Denny, Vice President of Sony Worldwide Studios Europe, said that “to the best of his knowledge” the PS Vita would not be region locked, which leaves room to backtrack, but we’re hoping that’s the final word.

After all, the Nintendo 3DS has come under fire for its intrusive terms of service and the fact that it’s region-locked, meaning games released in Japan must be played on a Japanese 3DS and American releases played on a Region 1 3DS. This locks out players around the world from importing and enjoying games released in other regions.

Game developers and studios say that region locking is required to control the release of games around the globe, so a game isn’t released in one location and then pirated and trafficked to other parts of the world. Most gamers disagree entirely, and claim that region locking actually encourages piracy because it denies willing buyers the games they want to play – instead, they have to import an entire console as well as the title they want.

If the PS Vita is region-free, it’ll make historical sense: after all, the PlayStation 3 is region-free as well, and gamers anywhere in the world can import PS3 games and play them on their home consoles. Most gamers have responded positively to the news, since it means the doors are open to a world of small and independent titles only released in specific markets. It also means that gamers can buy games when traveling, or get a hold of a title only released overseas.
