the stand i have is well ventilated but it could also be that i have an original ps3 and ive heard they tend to get very hot. do the ps3 slims have better and quieter fans in them?? or is it the same as the phats??

no they're pretty much silent and run really cool...basically people with phats over heat due to 2 reasons:

    1. they never shut it down...they leave it running and on cause they're too lazy to power off/on
    2. they play for so many hours at a time, it over heats the cpu and all and the solder flows out from it causing failures

my ps3 phat is loud with its fan - its in open, ventilated space and i use my ps3 primarily as a media server, play games irregularly and short-bursts. it makes such a racket, i find playing back media frustrating at times when i am nick-picky...

oh - didn't think of that. looking into replacing the fan to see if it does quieten it down. perhaps for OP, though replacing the fan in the ps3 isn't an option...

so, sensors on the motherboard kicks the fan going, when its recorded temps reaches a certain point.

what's the go with the thermal paste of the phats? would getting quality thermal paste make a difference - as better heat dissipation on the chip would mean the fans kick in less frequently?

The quality makes a big difference. Your want to use "Artic Silver 5". Costs about $9 at RadioShack.
