Hey guys

Not that many people here do ps3 modding. I know the basics but I'm pretty sure you can't mod your ps3 anyways.
To mod a ps3, you need to be on 3.55 OFW. Then you could have used something like Geohots jailbreak, kmeaw, or others. The risk would be that you could brick your ps3, the advantages, back up your games into your hard drive, homebrew, linux, and piracy (not recommended).
There's definitely no way to mod a ps3 anymore for free. If you're on 4.10 or below, I think you can downgrade but you have to buy something called an E3 Flasher, your ps3 must have been at 3.55 once before, so it can't be on brand new ps3's. However, all of the methods now require you do a lot of shit and someone who has never has experience with modding a ps3, opening up a ps3 and moving parts around/ adding parts/ working with something like an E3 flasher aka you, will have a ridiculously hard time trying to mod it.
If you still wish to continue to hack your ps3 (which I don't recommend unless you're willing to pay a lot and have a professional ps3 modder do it for you) head over to ps3hax.net, read up on their downgrading posts and CFW posts and see what you can make of it.
Seriously bro, it's not worth it. Not anymore.
I looked at doing at one point and here was what I remember
1. You can't play games online or connect to PSN
2. You'll be on FW version 3.5 so you won't have all the PS3 features
3. Cost money
Things could of changed by then.
There's a way to go around the first point and play online, but I'm not sure if it's online with others who modded it or online with every ps3 user. There and some things that can help you play later games for games that require an update past 3.55, I think it was just recently made. As for the features, that's nothing much. But it does cost a lot to mod it now.
Oh... i aint modding then I guess...
