stumbled into this by swapping batteries while my psp was plugged into a charger. it has a list of settings
    cpu clock xmb (default, 10/20 - 333/166)
    cpu clock game (default, 10/20 - 333/166)
usb device (memory stick, flash 0, 1, 2, 3, umd disc)
umd iso mode (normal, m33 driver, sony np9660, oe softs)
    iso video mount none
    reset device
    exit

what I want to know is exactly that i've stumbled onto here and what if any good will it do me to change the settings
I understand the first two have to do with the cpu clock speed, but I'm mostly curious about this

Its the custom firmwares own menu. Hold R trigger when booting up psp and there will be options including the ones you found on m33 recovery menu that you can adjust. There's an option Configuration>Use VshMenu enable it and you can access a submenu VSH menu while in XMB too but not all the options. You either hit Home or select button to bring it up in XMB depending on CFW version it changed in later versions from home button to Select button. The first two options you mentioned basically let you overclock your psp in game UMD/ISO and XMB. I just left mine at default which I think is 222/111 you can't really harm anything by overclocking to the full 333 mhz. Usb device (memory stick, flash 0, 1, 2, 3, umd disc) allow you to see exactly these things when in USB mode connected to a PC. You could only see memory stick on OFW and none of the other 5 things when connected via Usb to pc. I have heard not to mess with flash 0 and 1 cause it can brick your psp and you might or might not be able to reinstall CFW not sure about 2, 3 haven't messed with these myself. You could however make backups of these on a PC. Usb UMD setting will let you see the UMD when inserted allowing you to rip it to a computer then back to mem stick which is not possible on OFW. UMD ISO mode allows you to set the driver I left mine at Sony NP9660 you can play games off memory stick with no UMD inserted. You should have an ISO folder on root of memory stick that contains a subfolder named VIDEO. Create one if you don't have one or reformat mem stick on CFW psp itself to create file structure (backup data on pc first if you don't wanna lose any stuff) then put it back after folder structure is created. After formatting you should also have additional folders seplugins folder, GAME150, GAME3X, GAME 4X etc. Put your ISO games in that folder and UMD Movie in VIDEO subfolder. Most of the rest of the features are pretty self explanatory.

    Code:
    cpu clock xmb (default, 10/20 - 333/166)
change the cpu clock setting, these will reflect only during non gaming sessions.

    Code:
    cpu clock game (default, 10/20 - 333/166)
change the cpu clock settings, these will reflect only when ur playing a game (think of it as running a overclocked PC)

    Code:
usb device (memory stick, flash 0, 1, 2, 3, umd disc)
-if you set it to memory stick and exit the menu, then enable ur usb connection you will be see the files on ur Memory Card.
-if you set it to flash0 and exit the menu, then enable ur usb connection you will be see the files on ur flash0 (internal memory). (not recommended)
-if you set it to flash1 and exit the menu, then enable ur usb connection you will be see the files on ur flash1 (internal memory). (not recommended)
-if you set it to flash2 and exit the menu, then enable ur usb connection you will be see the files on ur flash2 (internal memory). (not recommended)
-if you set it to flash3 and exit the menu, then enable ur usb connection you will be see the files on ur flash3 (internal memory). (not recommended)
-if you set it to umd disc and exit the menu, then enable ur usb connection you will be see the files on ur umd (given that u have a umd in place) (u can extract ur game or movie this way)

    Code:
umd iso mode (normal, m33 driver, sony np9660, oe softs)
-set to NORMAL mean if ur running a PSP game off ur memory stick u need to have some sort of umd in ur umd drive inorder to run the games of ur memory stick.
-set to M33 DRIVER mean u dont need a dummy umd present in ur umd drive to play the psp games off ur memory stick.
SONY MP9660 and OE SOFTS (personally i havent used these options)

    Code:
    iso video mount none
i think this option enables you to see movies/video from ur memory stick given that u placed the files in proper directory (ms0:\ISO\Video)

    Code:
    reset device
Restarts ur PSP (basically a cold boot)

    Code:
    exit
    Exit the VSH M33 menu

    I hope this help

thanks for the help, quite informative, and also answered a question I had been about to ask, as I'd just ran into the issue of not being able to run certain things on my psp without a umd in it
