I don't think Open Edition has been continued. You'll need to update to 3.52 M33 and then update further. So yes, you need to update in stages. Also, check the READMEs of each CFW for requirements.

put cfw 3.40 oe on my sons psp a very long time ago now i would like to bring it upto date could someone tell me which cfw to put on. Do i put the latest on or do i do it in stages.Thanks for any help
