I'm planning to get a psp and I've been trying to decide between the psp 1000 and the psp 2000. I wanna 1000 since it is cheaper and seems more sturdy, but the extra RAM on the 2000 is sure making my decision more difficult. So I'm asking you guys if the extra RAM in the psp 2000 would make snes/ps1/gba/etc emulation better or some other advantages it has. Thanks.

Just get the PSP 1000. The extra RAM isn't noticeable, as the developers have to program their games/emulators to work on all PSP models. Although, the DaedalusX64 team (N64 emulator) is trying to make a separate emulator that runs faster on PSP 2000s. Still, go with the PSP 1000. They're way more durable, cheaper, and 100% hackable.

i can't recall ever noticing the performance 'hit' of lessor RAM on the phat. though, there are some hb which can't run on phats, but does on slims - and visa versa (i.e. kernel 1.50 add-on?)

i have read articles on the difference between phats and slims, but these articles suggested very little performance difference in real life. i.e. when loading UMD games, the slim is a fraction quicker than phat.

i think you should base you purchasing decision on other physical differences:

    • IR feature (phat) or not (all other psp models) - though there aren't much hb which uses ir.
    • chuckier or lighter
    • brighter screens (as you go later in the models)

furthermore, the controls are slightly different betw the slim and phat. the d-pad is slightly different betw phat and slim (its more raised on slims).

other differences betw phat and slim are cosmetic - change of speakers position, the memstick slot and umd tray, etc.

finally, all phats are fully hackable and can make PB. while if slim, you wanna avoid TA-088v3, if you wanna fully hack.
