The Emu Pack above fixed it for me - DGen worked fine, but didn't work on it's own before (I'm running 4.01)

I'm so impressed with all the emulators there are in that pack - I use a CPC emulator on my PC as well, and lo and behold Caprice32 was right there in the list!! (I grew up with an Amstrad CPC!) So now I'm doublly happy

yeah to many people blame the firmware, the only case I ran into that firmware messed something up was... actualy just recently (2 days ago) and it's on Castlevania the Dracula X Chronicles ... but this is an error that isn't just on the ISO. it's on the UMD. and any firmware above 3.8 even OFW crashes when you play SOTN on it with your familures turned on after you beat the green orb over richter belmont. and from then on.

but that's not about the firmware. it's just bad judgment on Konami's side. to code something so horribly. I didn't even realize this error because SOTN is not the main game it's an added game that you have to unlock. but I still am playing it through because they fixed a ton of problems with the Original PS1 version.... also after you beat it you can play as Maria... and that's all I really wanted to do anyway was play as Maria.

try changing the umd iso mode to oe isofs
