Hello everyone, I have been reading the forums for a week and this is my first post. First off let me explain the setup I have in mind. I just purchased a psp off ebay along with a 40gb portable HD and am trying to prepare for modding it so that I can play the games I purchased off a memory card to avoid the hassle of carrying the discs, as well as emulators and homebrew.

I am just trying to get the general steps down that I am going to need to complete to accomplish this. I have experience in softmodding Xbox's and hopefully once I learn I can create a helpfull tutorial for those who are in my shoes.

First of all I know I will need a FW Version that will allow me to play these backups. If my psp is above 2.8 it doesnt sound like there are any options at this time. If it isn't above 2.8 then my understanding is that I can Downgrade to 1.5, then run Devhook to emulate later firmwares.

I really haven't figured out if I need to go back all the way to 1.5 FW to play backups, but 1.5 systems are being sold readily on Ebay so this was an easy assumption.

Are there any extra softwares to install so that I can play ISO'ed backups with a 1.5 FW?

I apologize if this is a newb thread but I am just trying to sort out all the information I have been reading so that I don't make any costly mistakes when my PSP arrives. Any help on the general steps I need to take would be greatly appreciated.

    *Edit*
After doing some more diggin on other sites besides this one I found a plethora of information for the beginner. I am not sure if its okay to link to other sites and if its against rules please edit me, but I found these two great sites with a lot to read on everything anyone would want to know.

If your PSP comes and it is below 2.81, I highly recommend downgrading to 1.5 and then upgrading to Dark_Alex's excellent custom firmware, 3.03 Open Edition (OE for short.)

OE will allow you to do all those things you want to do, along with having the ability to play your PlayStation backups.

Nothing is better than playing Gran Turismo 2 wherever I am, trust me on this

Good luck with whatever you decide to do with it. And yeah, we were all newbs once.

I think I have a good understanding of what I need to do now, however I still am wondering what the latest version of devhook is. I was thinking it was .46 but I have now read something about a devhook ultimate 6.2 or something. Not quite sure on what the differences are. Anyone know ? Also, DarkED, I saw you had a TA-082 board. I don't think I have come across a tutorial for downgrading that version of board. Any tips on how you did yours ?

No... Unless you like playing legalgames and no homebrew
So this Jewish kid walks up to his dad, right, and he goes, "Hey dad, can I have ten dollars?", and his dad just looks at him and goes "Eight dollars? What do you want six dollars for?"

theres no downgrader for 2.81 yet. u need firmware below 2.80 for non ta-082 psp's and 2.71 for ta-082 psp's

hopefully within a few months there will be.. but until then hang on.. AND DON'T UPGRADe!1!!!

THE MOST recent devhook is .52 i think.... it allows you to emulate 3.03 firmware, although you have to do the dump...

Ok so Once I get to at least 3.02-B I read that I can now play psx backups. Am I going to need a program for playing the backups, (not making them, I have that figured out).

Yes., as long as the ta082 is below or at 2.71, you can downgrade to 1.5, and then do all the stuff that a normal mobo can do.
