I noticed when playing PSX games on my PSP that although the screen setting is called "full screen" it looks like more of a letter-box size with the black strips at the top and bottom...

Does anyone know a way to actually make the games full screen, without cutting anything off the edges or getting black strips? I would really love it like that.

It doesn't seem to happen to every game though, on Crash Bash it only has a black strip at the top but the bottom fits perfectly.

    Any ideas?

Depends on the game...most games will be small like that but honestly lets not be picky you ARE PLAYING A PSX GAME ON YOUR PSP. You can make it full screen but the game will be very wide and probably not as enjoyable.

Compression doesn't have anything to do with games. you don't lose quality or size. Compression just changes the algorithm into something the emu understands and will save space on redundant "0" and "1". compression only loses image quality in image conversions or movie compressions. (lossy or lossless). Also its important to understand the PSP resolution is way better then ps1's... thats the reason its almost 2 inch by 2 1/2 inch in original mode and it actually looks good. fyi when you go fullscreen you just stretch out the image so your not getting the "actual resolution" and it looks more like shit.

Yeah if it happens to be PAL, try Custom FW 3.10 OE it allows for native PAL. Converting to NTSC sucks.

No, Im using NTSC PSX games

I just wish there was some patch to change it from a letter-box screen to full screen or something... Im just annoyed when Im not getting the most out of something I guess.

Native PAL hey? How would I make a game without converting it to NTSC then? Last time I checked the program I use to make PSX eboots automatically converts to NTSC...

full screen psx games on a psp look horrible. youre trying to play a game that was originally designed for 4:3 tv's on a 16:9 psp screen. its looks distorted and stretched.

Yeah... and its even more stretched when its in the silly letter-box mode they call "full screen" It not only stretches it but then makes it shorter too making it even more distorted and stretched...

Its kinda why I started this thread, I dont mind it being stretched across but the being shortened aswell.......

The black bars you are experiencing are due to the game being programmed for the PSX and is taking into account the fact that the game would be displayed on TVs that would have Overscan on there image.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overscan

Any part of a games image takes up processing power, so leaving parts of the image that in theory will never be seen leaves more processing power for the parts that will be seen.
All consoles (Dreamcast, N64, PS1 & 2) I have played suffer from this problem if you have a TV with Zero Overscan (like mine) the only one that isn't affected is the XBOX 360 as it was designed with Zero Overscan HDTVs in mind. The PSP screen due to it being LCD has no overscan so obviously you see the full PSX image weather you want to or not, PAL PSX games will probably make this more noticeable because of the way they are converted from there NTSC counterparts.

So then why can you set it too zoom where the screen image is far bigger than the PSP screen? There are no black strips or anything its just so big that i cant see the whole thing.. it goes off the screen...

Shall I show screen shots so you can all get a better idea of what I mean? Im positive its possible.
