Monster Hunter Freedom Unite: Can UMD and ISO play together?

I have been considering buying a copy of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite after hearing so much about it, but I have heard that the UMD version forces you to upgrade to Firmware 5.50.

Are there ways to play the UMD version using custom firmware, in my case 5.00 M33-6?

Also, will I be able to play MHFU with my friends, either over Ad Hoc Party or otherwise, while still using Custom firmware?

yes the ISO can play with the UMD.
also Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G can play with Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.
