For other questions, might want to hit up the Guides section or do a search first.

It not free (unless you like to pirate stuff) but theres a great program out there called SlySoft CloneDVD Mobile that rips a cd and encodes it to mp4 on the fly. Its the fastest ive ever used too, on my old 1.8ghz/768mb ram pc its rips a 2 hour movie in about 2 hours. If the dvd is encrypted you'll have to use a program like DVD43 to get past that. Its an easy program to use so no need to worry.

I do my DVD ripping/conversion the hard way. Well, not uber hard, but it does require some familiarity with video editing apps. All software used is either free or open source. If you want to give it a try, here's the link.

I've had to use the above method as The O.C. Season 1 (so sue me, it's one of my concessions to being a girl) was being a pain in the neck to convert. All programs I tried, both freeware and trialware were choking up on it and kept giving me bad a/v sync. Darned hybrid framerate. Anyhow, the method hasn't failed me yet.
