(New guy) What to do with CFW and all that?
Hi guys!
I'm new here. I just got my heart set on a new Slim PSP, which I'm eager to turn into something better.
I love the Final Fantasy series, and I would like to be able to play FF7 and FF8 on it. Also I just got FF CC in a not so legal way (because it's not available in my country yet), and I would like to be able to play that too... I'm gonna buy the game afterwards too, and I have both FF7 and FF8 on original PSX cd's.
But my question is really, what i need to do? I've tried reading up on the guides, but I'm kinda confused about, if I need to mod my battery with a hardware mod, or if i can do it with some software? I'm a happy modder off the iPhone, so software mods I'm kinda used too, but hardware mods isn't my cup of tea
Thanks in advance. |

I read about something with a "Tool" battery. Could that be useful to me?
EDIT: And does the MS Duo Pro HAVE to be Sony? Can you use SanDisk, or something other?

if you have access to a modded psp you can mod your battery very easily. Codejunkies sells a tool that is kinda like a battery dock that softmods your battery w/o having to find a modded psp. Its like $20 or something. Once you get a modded battery you need the magic mem stick, and there are like 20 programs that can make it for you. Most of which have guides on the forum here.
Once you get the cfw installed we can work on psx emulation. You wont get any help with pirated games though.

yeah, pretty much. Nobody opens their psp anymore anyway. Hardmods are really just battery hardmods. See, what happens is if the battery has a serial number of 0xFFFFFFFF then it boots from the memory stick instead of the internal rom (kinda like booting from a cd on a pc). Softmodding changes your battery's serial no. If you cant softmod your battery you can *carefully* cut it open and *carefully* cut one of the pins inside. This has the same effect, but is irreversible.
I would suggest you go with CodeJunkie's battery mod thing. Ill post a link if i can find it. That unit can softmod your battery and when you are done it will return it to normal. To make the magic memory stick all you need is a pc and a means to read a MS Pro Duo (your psp works great, lol)
And no, it doesnt have to be a sony MS. I have a sony, lexar, and sandisk, they all work great. Get whatever you can find cheap, just dont buy on ebay, most of them are fake and dont work right. Frys.com often has really good sales.

Thanks alot
I found the Battery Service thingy, from a shop in Denmark, so that's great. BTW, how many mAH does the standard battery in the Slim come with? Would it be worth it to get a better one?
And by "your psp works great", you mean that i can just connect the PSP to my computer, with the memorystick inside, and get the files with the CFW transfered in that way? |

yeah, this would have to be before you convert your battery because when your battery is in "service mode" (aka Tool Battery) and its in your psp you cant boot normally, it only goes into service mode. You could take your battery out and boot up your psp with the charger plugged in though.
Then you hook up the usb, run a program on your computer, and it copies all the necessary files over. Then you boot up with your fancy new "tool" battery and you are set. Its not a difficult process if you know how to read. :P
Idk about the slim's battery. The life isnt as terrible as people make it out to be. Yeah, its kinda short, but i just charge mine every night. I dont plan on playing 8 hours a day so im covered

Could I get you to link a guide for making the Magic Memory Stick, and installing the latest and greatest CFW? |

[Release] Catb50's Ultimate Magic Memory Stick Creator v3.0 - MaxConsole Forums
this should get you through it. When it asks, tell it to install 3.80m33-5
The guy who makes CFW (Dark_AleX) hacked the network update in that version, so all you need to do to continue upgrading your custom firmware is use the network update. It likns right to his server and gets you what you need, no pc involved. Once you get 3.80m33-5 installed post here and we'll make sure your netowrk update is set right so you dont accidentally get sony's firmware again.

3.90 M33 series is O.K. I guess, but 3.80 M33 series seems to be more compatible and easier to use. When 4.00 M33 comes out (lol) 3.90 M33 will be more compatible... Everything moves with the current CFW, but it doesn't happen overnight, so, the newest CFW won't always be the most compatible. |
