Default "Hello World"

Hi all, my name is Mike and I am a one day old PSP customer.

I bough a few games and am enjoying them thoroughly, but being a student of computer programming (only in first year of university) I wish to utilize all the possabilites of my new asset.

That being said, I've read and re-read almost 6 straight hours today on various topics about the PSP, homebrew, Pandora's Battery, and (my favourit aritcle) the Wiki-pedia history of homebrewing.

Anyways, enough ramble here is my question:

I own a Piano black 2000 Series PSP and I updated it last night (realizing now that was a stupid move) to version 3.95

I do not own a PSP Phat, nor do I know anyone who does.

Is there any possible way I can get cutom firmware onto the PSP without spending Money?

Regards,

Mike Temp.

P.s. Also, what does anyone recommend for how far should I downgrade, which loader to use, and where can I submit a game/file if I program something in the future for a PSP???

To answer your first question - Yes. You can follow this guide -
http://www.pspmod.com/forums/psp-har...ery-guide.html (Easy-To-Use Pandora's Battery Guide)

OR

Post a want ad on craiogslist for a free modding. At the same time, see if any of these guys are close to you.

Modders
DarkMessiah List of People Providing Pandora Service For Free, WorldWide

Next, if your in NE PA, I can do it for you.

Lastly, and you have to spend a little here - You can ship it to me, pay for shipping both ways. I have a good rating on ebay and I am a good man who sticks to his word.

Other than that, you either break your battery or spend some cash.

With the psp slims, you are gong to have to spend some money to put CFW on it. Slims need to be downgraded before they can have CFW installed on them. This requires a Pandora Battery and Magic Memstick to flash the psp and update with the cfw. You can either:

1) Learn how to make these items yourself ($$Battery + $$memstick)
2) Buy the items needed and learn how to install CFW yourself ($$Battery + $$memstick)
3) Have someone local do it for you ($$install)

I had someone local do it for me for cheap.

I've read the guide twice now, and I do have a few questions, namely:

1. Other guides online say to break the 4th prong, but the guide you suggested said to only scratch along the distance of the gold wire (I'd post a URL to section I'm reffereing to, but apparently I cant post URLs without first having 15 posts ) Is there any difference???

2. After I cconvert my memory stick to a magic stick will it loose any functionality?

3. When I mod my PSP and put 3.90m33 on, will the PSP loose any original functionality, and will I be able to update the system with any official firmware afterwards (say sony releases 4.00 and the UMDs I own will not respond with 3.90m33)

4. really n00b: how large are game backups (on average) in MB? (I'm curious because I have a lot of UMDs and Itn enoying to carry them around)

See now I REALLY appriciate that! I'm a senior a a Satelite TV forum and I really enjoy helping new users with getting the most out of their sattelite Dishs, and I know i'm the exact same way: we do this because we enjoy the challange of something new.

Thanks!

@ temppass

Answering your previous post point wise

1] Actually there are three ways of doing a hard mod 1. Cutting the Pin, 2. Scratching the copper trace, 3. One wire method ........ You know the first two ..... In this link you can get info on the third one http://www.pspmod.com/forums/hardwar...-hard-mod.html (How-To: Switchable Pandora PSP-Slim Battery (Hard-Mod)) ......... All three works.. Which process you want to do is upto you ..... The third process has the better chance of reverting the battery back to normal

2] No it will not loose any functionality ......... You can always format the magic memory stick to make it normal

3] Updating to 3.90M33, PSP will not loose any original functionality ...... It will only add to it's functionality ......... Yes you can update to official firmware even if you have a custom firmware

4] Size of the game can be from few hundred MB to 1.8 GB (Which is the maximum a UMD can hold)

Thanks Jack - Yes, everything he said. And you dont have to hardmod - if you screw it up, you'll hose the battery, this alternative is much safer, several of us here at pspmod can vouche for it and love it.

But it will cost you 20 bux plus shipping.

Again, thanks for the quick responses gents,
I think I'll end up going witht he Datel Battery Service Tool.

One last question then:
Of all the methods listed which do you consider to be the most efficient/ best to use (aka which one do you professionals use?)

Thanks.

I use DCv3 only because that's what came with my first Pandora download in the archive "TheFilesYouNeed.zip". I suppose I should just bump it up to the new version.

Catb50 seems to be very popular.

Hey,
So I've realized htat I was spending way too much time in my quest for the perfect PSP, so I went back tothe first post and took the adivce of checking craigslist.
Got everything done for $40.00: Custom Firmware help on dumping my UMDs onto a stick. The gentlemen who did this however explained how he didn't creat niether a bandora's battery nor a magic memory stick. I think he was pulling my leg...

nevertheless, all works now and I'm very happy for all the support I've recieved here.
