Default UMD drive help...

Hello all! I am new here and was hoping someone could help me or give advice.
I recently got a modded PSP from craigslist for $90. It seemed awesome at first.
I got home and figured out SNES emulators and such after some help from this site. I linked it up with my PS3 and played games wirelessly and all was good.
Well today I stopped by Game Stop and picked up FFVII Crisis Core.
I popped it in, and nothing happened. The system made some weird noises and the loader in bottom right never stops spinning. So obviously I called the guy I bought it from, he told me to change some settings. It still didn't work and now he doesn't answer his phone

My software is: 3.90 M33-2

I looked around the forum before posting, but it seems no one else has had this problem. unless I missed the post.

At this point I am guessing the laser is busted or something, but I don't feel safe fixing it myself (not to mention dont wanna pay for it). It's all really frustrating and I need some solution. Whether it's someone buying it from me for a fair price so I don't end up broke, or trading it for a working one and paying a little extra.

Where I am at: $90 for system, $10 for AC charger, $10 for Memory stick. Total of $110, buying a new UMD is like $40. so...I could have bought a new PSP all together in the first place. Such is life.

I am hoping someone has an idea or a fair offer.
THANKS!

Check your UMD laser scanner. It might be loose, if it is, you're out of luck... forever

The laser does not appear to be loose.
Right now I really just want the guy to answer his phone and refund me
Hehe,,,I could post his # and have hundreds of people call him asking to refund me...but that might be illegal, or at least not very nice

Did he do anything to your UMD drive? It's impossible for CFW installation to destroy physical parts of your PSP.

In my opinion, he probably did not know it was busted. And I am hoping he's not answering because he's at work, etc.
What probably happened is he may have dropped it or something.

I have looked around on the net and have tried to fix it, but I am 98% sure it needs to be replaced. So now I am at one of two points: Someone buys it from me at a fair price, or original guy calls back and refunds me. Happy ending :P

You could always buy another UMD drive...that would knock you down about $30, and that's assuming that you have a fat.

Default UMD drive help...

well last night i completely opened up my psp with careful instructions.
I think I have pin pointed the problem: two gears that move the laser keep getting jammed. If i tap them a little they start to work, but get jammed again. using this method I successfully started a UMD. but the method is impractical, for it would involve taking apart my psp every time i Wanna play a UMD. So i bought a new drive on eBay for $20. I have read many guides how to replace it and feel I am ready to.

but like I said, the only problem was the gears, I just had no idea how to stop them from getting jammed.

GOOD NEWS!!! So I took out the UMD drive and took a loser look at the gears. Upon further inspection I noticed an EXTREMELY small white piece of plastic. AKA "The Problem". I took an exacto blade and cut that sucker out. After installing things back and putting in a UMD, I can now say I am the proud owner of a fully functional PSP!!! yay! So for further reference, if anyone's UMDs don't load. open up the door and turn the system on:
After turning it on flip a little black swith inside and see if the laser lights up and the disc spinner spins. If it does, there's prolly something stuck in your gears. EASY FIX!!!

@Nove91
Well I have a PSP fat, so I'm not sure how to take apart a slim PSP, but if you have the same problem, try and find a guide to opening the system and check the gears. It took a lot of courage and patience to do it.

@Frontline93
I was real scared to open my PSP to. But finally I just got frustrated and did it anyways.
I followed a certain guide.

Google search "sony-psp-umd-door-installation-how-to"
And its the one on llamma dot com

The only trouble I had was the UMD door, i accidently broke the hinge, but bought a new one on ebay to replace it.

Frontline, before you take it apart, make sure your laser lights up and moves up and down. If it wont move left and right, it might be the same problem. PM me or post reply if you have a question

Don't be.
Its a piece of cake.
If you're afraid of losing or putting something back in the wrong place, write down where you got everything or take a picture of it before you go on with taking it apart.
