-i dont think the psn network will mess anything up if you use it! but then again i have never used it.
-you can use the network update to update your cfw! just make sure your psp is set up properly before using! to do this go to your recovery menu, under configuration, and make sure where it says "use M33 network update" it says enabled!
(if your not sure how to get into recovery, you need to power off your psp by holding up on the power switch till it powers off....then hold in the R button when powering back up!)(or hit select while in the xmb and choose restart and hold the R button in after that!)

-dont mess with anything in the recovery menu if your unsure what it does.. just some friendly advice!

-yeah if it is enabled you will get the latest M33 firmware
-if it is not enabled you get sonys update and you will no longer have cfw and will need a pandora battery again to put it on!!
if you dont feel comfortable using the network update, just download updates from here when they become available and install them manually...thats what i do anyway!

if its just a minor update to an existing firmware like 5.00M33-4 in the download should be an "update" folder.. you can just place that in your psp/game folder, and run the update from your xmb under the game menu! some major updates require an additional download. they all usually have a readme.txt that will tell you what you need to do!
