Useing the select button in game.

I have Final Fantasy 9 downloaded. If anyone here is unfamiliar with the gameplay elements of 9 it requires you to hit the select button to view story elements to progress the game. Unfortunately because my PSP is modified when I hit select the pops loader menu appears and does not effect the game.
Is there a way to reassign the select button or some combination of buttons that will trigger "select" in game?
