How to make the standard sony earphones louder

Well lets face it, they are not very loud. Its been annoying me for sometime now, i spoke to a guy (a sound engineer) about this and he showed me this way of doing it. It works well and they are much louder.

Tools needed:
Fingers of steel!!! (or some pliers)
A soldering iron

First thing you need to do is remove the grey covers of the headphones. To do this hold the grey cover with the pliers and twist the headphone, it should come off quite easily.

I have drawn a diagram for the next bit to make it easier!


The next bit involves the soldering iron so heat it up. You will need to de-solder the copper wire shown in the diagram, removing it from part A. You will then need to solder it onto point B, which is on the other side of the resistor. Dont worry i did this myself, its not that hard. It just takes some patience and a steady hand.

Click the grey headphone cover back on with the pointy bit facing downwards towards the wire (as it was) and try them out!!

I hope this helped you lot that are fed up with the 'ear friendly' homo headphones

I think those are the "unrestricted" headphones. You might not be able to make them louder. It only works if there is a resistor in there that you can bypass.

Does this make them louder without distorting the sound? Really want them louder because I go on holiday in a week and I doubt I will hear through them properly over the loud noises from the plane :P

Ok... I am another sound engineer. Don't expect you guys to believe me and that's OK. Here is what the modification is actually doing...

The original graphic showing where the wire is being moved from point A to B... The resistor in there is what is knocking down the sound level. Seems that some of us (I'm talking about my old decrepit ass) kids played our headsets so loud out in public ;

(showing my age here... Walkmans had JUST come out. No, not the CD players either. Cassette!!! Go ahead and laugh... yeah, yeah, very funny... Some of your folks may be old enough to remember 8 tracks)

that some idiotic under worked government agency said they had to protect your hearing cause your too damn dumb to know how to turn it down.

So what your are doing here is actually circumventing the "safety" measures. OOOooo!!! Watch out!!! Your head might explode!!!

Give me a break... If rock & roll didn't kill my hearing then it was the tanks and A-10 Fairchilds going over my head that did it.

As for the complex circuitry in the other photo... I am assuming here, that those are noise canceling. I'm not being picky, but the grayed out areas and drawings on a smaller photo make that analysis an educated guess.

The only other thing I can offer is... When it comes to electronics, you get what you pay for. (yes, yes, there are exceptions, but not too many...)
