Default PSP Phat USB Charge mod

Alright, I know this has been done and is over on AcidMods. No offense to them, but their pictures aren't that great..

At any rate, I have done this mod and then documented it with MUCH larger and clearer pictures.

This is a pretty easy mod to do since you've only got to solder 1 wire at 2 points. I have not included a disassembly tutorial because if you can't disassemble your PSP then you have no business soldering on it's motherboard. I am not responsible if YOU eff up YOUR PSP.

All the pictures are clickable links to the considerably larger original.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

With all that out of the way, it's time to gather up all your supplies.

1X wire (I prefer network cable wires for stuff like this. They're small, braided, and high quality. Kynar wire would probably work just fine but IMO it's much better for LED triggers. I always keep network cable wires around because they're great for rewiring Guitar Hero controllers. They have all the same color wires as the controllers have buttons and also a brown for ground. Perfect.)

1X soldering iron

1X solder (I like RadioShack's .032 Silver Bearing solder)

1X soldering flux (since the silver bearing solder isn't rosin core)

1X knife/razor blade

----------------
So we'll be working on the backside of the mobo here. Flip it over and arrange it the same way as it is in the picture so you don't get flipped around and then solder in the wrong place. It's happened to the best of us.

Go ahead and tin the wire with some flux and lightly dab some solder on that connection

----------------

That was easy. Now flip the motherboard over and solder onto the pin shown for the power plug. As a word of warning, don't spend too much time with the soldering iron here and definitely don't bump while the solder is flowing. That little pin you're soldering to is not held onto the motherboard by much at all.

-----------------

Now just get it all back together and you should be charging via USB now. Because someone will inevitably ask, I don't know what happens if you plug in AC power while USB charging. I don't see much of a point to doing it either, but...

It will fry your motherboard/battery, think about it 5v from ac + 5v from usb cable (I'm pretty sure it's 5v) so 10v is going to the battery, so that will fry the battery (possible make it explode) and possible fry your motherboard.

EDIT - Just looked it up USB 2.0 is indeed 5v.

So would this work like a battery charger for a car then? No more voltage but double the amps will charge it up faster but the charge won't last as long?

the rate of discarge is determined by the device. you could damage the cell and shortin it life span

Default PSP Phat USB Charge mod

I have done this mod to my psp 1001. The only problem I had was that it killed my fake 3.6v 3600mAH battery pack (it's more like 1200mah lol). My original psp 1800mah is still working.

This is the battery that died.

Cool, although some of the err.. not so crafty ones might solder it into the memory stick section -__-.. definetly better than the acidmods one

I did this on my last PSP. It worked like a charm and was very useful. Nice pics and tutorial though. Definitely better than AcidMods, although they do deserve credit.

I'm not trying to take credit away from AcidMods. I have a great respect for the folks over there. As far as I know, they pioneered this mod (any many others).
