Default Newbie Tutorial: Checking Your System Firmware

Hello New Psp Modders. so you just got a brand new sony psp huh? excited? i bet you are. but before u go and run system update, check to see which firmware you are running and what the mod community offers for it. so without further ado, heres a simple how to on checking which firmware aka system version you are running on your psp. before we begin, you may be asking yourself "whats firmware?" well, heres how Wikipedia describes it:

Firmware: In computing, firmware is software that is embedded in a hardware device. It is often provided on flash ROMs or as a binary image file that can be uploaded onto existing hardware by a user

Wait, What Did You Just Say?
well its simply a program that tells the hardware how to act. firmware versions can be upgraded and downgraded or, backdated to please the owner of the psp, but its not without risk, so please understand these risks when you take on the task of messing with the firmware.

So Where Do I Go If I Want To Change My Firmware?

Sonys official site usually has the latest firmware avalible for download, but we dont encourage keeping your psp up to date if you wanna enjoy the mod scene. older firmwares can be found at psp-hacks.com as well as pspupdates.qj.net. its wise to read about the art of psp modding before u start flashing the rom and such. its a shame to see a new modder damage his psp out of enthusiam.

now, on with the tutorial:

Step 1:

Heres whats called the XMB, aka the Psp's operating system. its like Windows for a computer. it lets u launch applications, tweak the system settings, and much more. You can access the XMB by turning the psp on without a umd in the drive.

Step 2:

In order to check what "Firmware" you're running, youll need to scroll all the way to the left in the XMB. this is where you should be at this point

Step 3:

Now, scroll down till you see System Settings. Click on it with the X button

Step 4:

Scroll down again till you see System Information and click it with the X button. now youll be able to see the basic info about your psp, mac address, the software version and the psp's name.

And there you have it. you've successfully check your firmware version. now you can continue to read threads in the forum to determine what you can do with the version you have. good luck!

Default Newbie Tutorial: Checking Your System Firmware

I read the instructions in the manual when I first got my psp, it was the first time I read one too. I was just soo excited about getting my psp.

I don't see why people dont just read the instructions it may be boreing, but it is really helpful. Tell ya the truth though I don't really see a need for this tutorial. I'm glad you took the time to make it, it shows consideration.

I'm sure I will be flamed by the 1001, "admirers", as those people like to call themselves. Whatever It doesn't really matter, I just think it's really weird how they act differently in front of a girl that is on the internet.

Ok just making sure, I have seen your past tutorials and they were very well presented. Then I saw this one and wondered what you were doing. Your posts are generally direct and to the point which threw me off. Your posts are probably the only ones I read now, because everyone who posts after you says OMG JULIE YOU ARE A HOTTIE!!!!

I have been here a while, not quite as long as you *2 months more than me*, but I really just read the posts now because there really isn't a reason to post anymore. I look at some of these people's posts and they say something such as,

Wow that is awesome!!
or
What is it like?

Ok, sometimes im okay with this because its all that needs to be said, but please people if your gonna post something atleast make it an interesting read. Be more descriptive, use sentence expansion, nouns, adjectives, anything!!!

First I thought you were serious. Then I started to laugh as I kept reading. But for me I will not be upgrading meh psp. Not unless Sony comes out with something so fantastic to make me upgrade.

yeah I just don't see myself upgradng my 1.50 psp. Although, I would buy a used psp and upgrade and check out the scene on it. But to be honest other than playing homebrew, I watch alot of movies on my psp. And Sony will not be doing fantastic things with their PSP to make me upgrade.
