Ok, so I was looking on ebay at ipod hard drives, and found that the 30GB generation 4 1.8" Toshiba hard drives are about 100AUD. I decided that i wanted to make one work on my psp, and looked into the pinout config of the hard drive. It is a rather standard ide connection (parallel). I looked for a way to convert the serial connection for sony memory sticks to a parallel of any type, and found the datel compact flash/ microdrive converter. Hey presto, half way there. I then located a 2.5" laptop hard drive to compact flash adaptor on ebay. (though this is to boot a compact flash as a hard drive, it should still work, the only component on the board is a voltage regulator to change the 2.5" bay with 5v to 3.6v required by a cf card). I then found an adaptor for the new ipod hard drives (ZIF [zero insertion force] connector. these are almost identical to the fold-over plugs for the lcd and right hand board inside the psp) to 2.5" hard drive connector. this also is a reversed one (for putting 1.8" hard drives into laptops), but again, the only component is a voltage regulator 5v - 3.6v.

As for the psp's protocols, I heard that ever since 2.82ish, the psp can support "over 4GB cards". I looked into this, and apparently it supports up to 32GB memory cards, so the psp should (in theory) accept this hard drive.

    My idea is:
    1. buy all parts
    2. de-solder the voltage regulators (psp puts out 3.6v which 1.8" hdd needs)
    3. solder the pins together (unless you can find a female - female cable for 2.5 inch ide hard drives, and a female - female CF interface cable)
    4. Plug it into the psp, and pray you don't bust it all up.

Ipod hdd > ZIF to 2.5 adaptor > Compact flash to 2.5 adaptor > Datel CF to psp adaptor

P.S. If not enough power can be sent through a memory stick duo slot, a cable could easily be attatched to the battery connection to the motherboard, and sent through a hole in the black part of casing.

Please give me your comments on whether this could work.

oh... i just figured it used a data only connection, since that's how it accesses a microdrive... I always thought ide didn't have commands for where to move the needle or anything, just a data connection, and the hard drive decided when to spin... The pins for parallel data are the same in number, and voltage matches, both have reset pins, and some other pins match, but the hard drive uses pins like "DMARQ" and lacks pins such as "WAIT" from the cf card.

What if we programmed a PIC microcontroller to send the commands to the hard drive to continuously spin? the remaining matching pins for cf could obtain the data, and i think could also send commands for new data. it would reduce battery life a lot, but having 30GB of storage would be nice.

although this won't work with this one adaptor, if a large company cottoned on about this, they could make an adaptor for these hard drives to memory stick duo. It could work sumwhat similar to a usb enclosure, as they can change to a serial connection, but would just have to support the command pins as well...

alternatively, would it be possible to use the serial port as a usb host?(would have to run through IRshell style programs, or a really good cfw pluggin) the coding would be difficult and transfer rates would be horrible, but should be fast enough for mp3 playback and some video playback. If you really wanted, you could transfer games on the fly, it would just take a long long time...

the point of a PSP is to be portable lugging a 1.8" HDD will add even more weight
even if we can program a driver and set the HDD to drain the PSP's battery how are u supposed to carry the HDD around
