ok...so you're on 6.39me??? go to system settings to make sure, system information...if so, on the main psp screen, press the select button and change the "umd iso driver" to M33 or the sony driver...then try again

if not, you're getting that error with the initial updating of it...you're going to have to update to 6.39 officially 1st and then run the updater from my kit, best bet is to do this:

download this: 6.39 OFW - Downloads - Sony PSP MODS and Hacks Forums
extract it and place that update folder into you game folder...you can rename mine to update2 for now or it will over write...then update to 6.39ofw, after it finishes and reboots, delete that update folder and rename mine back to Update. then run it...i think that's your error right there

Thanks again, but I think I screwed up. Was I supposed to be able to boot the PSP from the MMS by holding the "L" button? That does not work, nor does it seem like it would. Anyway, the unofficial update software still isn't working, even after I officially updated it. I appreciate you r healp and if you have any other suggestions let me know.

what's it's doing exactly??? just not even running?? oh shit!!! my bad, i forgot you "do need to be on a cfw or hen 1st"!!! shit dude i'm sorry, gonna fix you right now!!

so you're ofw 6.39 right now...you need this one to install while on the ofw 6.39: 6.39ME-6 (OFW Version) - Downloads - Sony PSP MODS and Hacks Forums

after you get that installed, then you'll be back on track...again i apologize these updates come out so fast these days i mixed it up...so once that finishes, then you CAN softmod the battery and all will work like it's supposed to with the L trigger.

just a tip, once you're on that 6.39ME-6, i would go to our downloads again and get the ME-7 update for it...i would stay on that cfw but you can still make your softmod battery and all that just to mess with it, see how it all works, do what you want from there

OMG. You are a god, goku! It works! Tooksome trial and error and a short span where I thought my PSP was bricked... but it works! I'm now running 5.50 GEN-D3. Thank you so much! I will name my first-born goku2778... ok, maybe not. But thanks a million.
