In a podcast that's supposed to wrap up TGS 2006, the folks of GamesRadar have proudly declared that the PSP has failed. They state that nothing really notable was shown for the PSP during TGS2006 except Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, compared to four to five DS games that were featured at TGS 2006. According to them, the word from Developers at TGS 2006 is that the PSP is either failing or has already failed.

Despite high profile titles like Portable Ops and Square-Enix's Final Fantasy: Crisis Core, the PSP has pretty much almost taken the road of the Gamecube already. It seems that Developers with games that have a sure following are the only ones that have the courage to release titles for the PSP.

The tone of the PodCast's take on the handheld scene is that the DS just has so much more official content compared to the PSP.

And here Sony wonders why the Homebrew scene is growing. Perhaps if they had more "big" games for the handheld during release, or maybe if they welcomed hobbyists and developers the same way Microsoft is welcoming the same people with the XNA, game developers will have a brighter outlook for the PSP.

Don't take our word for it, watch the podcast yourselves

cant say i disagree. but in reality, the selection of games is the same as every other system: a few stand out titles, majority of good or medicore ones, and a handful of shit games. i love my psp just for the homebrew though, so it succeeded in my eyes

I'd hate to say it but I agree...for a personal reason. I personally think there aren't any interesting games for it. But then again, that is what I think....I am sure there are fun games for it that a lot of people enjoy. My friend loves the Fight Night for it, and GTA....so he thinks it is worth it.

They did the same thing with the Dreamcast because it was getting outsold. Dreamcast freaking rules....I don't know many people who own one and wouldn't say it was a fantastic system. But it lost in the console wars because of graphics...so the media went hard on it to give it a quick death. Looks like the same for the PSP.

Overall i don't think it was a real failure...just a failure to me because I didn't get into what it was offering. Does that make sense?

Embrace diversity.....play both handhelds the way they weren't meant to be played!

i dunno, maybe i'm to simple, but i'm lovin gitaroo-man-lives!
Not to mention how fun the old games are like untold legends (nothin beats a good ole diablo button mashin type game).

Homebrew opened a whole new dynasty to the psp anyways.
Its simply preference... if i wanted to control triangles, squares and happy faces, i'd have chosen DS. But i like highres stuff. Obviously the PSP community doesn't compare to the DS community... But were comparing things that share differences.

I bought the PSP over the DS because i wanted some of the funtionality the ipod has as well being able to play games. I also love being able to watch my backed up movies. I'm looking forward to traveling and having it entertain me. Why would i want to carry a seperate electronic device for every purpose the psp can already handle.

psp gave us the excellent Daxter, a portable version of burnout, socom, hot shots golf, etc. it shines as a multimedia system once u get used to how its setup. the major problem was sony using a format thats hard to work with and very few develpers taking any interest in it. but, the reason to own one will always be the homebrew

i never wanted a psp badly untill i saw a kid playing super mario world on his psp..i could careless about the games, sicne i dont play them. my psp is mostly a classic gaming system on the go.

wihthought homebrew psp would have failed miserably.

I agree that there aren't many good games to choose form but of the few that there are they are great. We are expecting a few games that will be good like Crisis Core and Grand theft auto is delivering one this year and maybe next year but I don't know how San Andreas will fit on a UMD. The graqn Turismo 4 Mobile that was being made for PSP seemed to have disapeared also. We can just hope some geat titles will launch for the PSP.

The Homebrew will keep it alive untill they make better games for it and even after that hombrew will stay there. I just don't think they can put the homebrew in the rating for PSP being a failure.

psp failed from lack of corporate support. the DS was easier to jump into since developers were already making cartridge based games for the GBA, so naturally moving to the DS's format was easier for them. the psp has a whole new format to get used to and it seems alot of developers failed to take it on. psp still has a bunch of good titles coming though, but for now, its a failure. they need to port Jak 2 over to psp. that game was excellent. we got daxter, but i like jak more. theres a ratchet and clank game on the horizion as well as another socom, so its not dead yet

I don't think it will die really for a few years atleast because i know many people that think it is expensive and they just buy a DS for the price diffence and the games are cheaper. But then again none of them have any idea what i tell them when i try explaining homebrew to them. They don't even get how I put the windows Vista portal on there. There like is that illegal because vista isn't oyut yet. but they just don't understand it was desinged for PSP with a Vista theme.
every one i know is very dumb when it comes to computers and PSPs.
    sad

wolf you just explained my life in that last little phrase there. IDK anybody who understands what the psp does. But atleast when my friends see what im doing they want to check it out so today i started to offer my personal homebrew package via CD's or DVD's. Already i got one offer for $10. I said i'd give him about $500 worth of psp games for just $10 and he went with it. I might have even done the same tho because of the downloading involved
Maybe i could put an ad somewhere
(just throughout the friends of mine, im not THAT stupid )
Hope you had a nice XMas! Help me modding my original Xbox. See my thread in Anything Goes Here forum

yea they released the PS2 for way too much money even though I had one of the systems that cost a lot of money. Now the one I use was only $150.
The price has gone down a few hundred dollors over the years. Sad that now you can get a PS2 for the same price as a DS. Too bad everyone already has one that wants one.

i think sony is strugging to keep up with the technologicle advances that nentendo is making. There just scrambling to pump out systems, games, and accesories, and its showing in their games and new systems.

i mean im not nockin the ps3 or psp but some of the games just straight up suck horse cock the graphics are awsome but the game content and play are just weak i beat toney hawk in 2 hours gta in 1 day and im workin on syphen philter DM right now

sony just has to slow down and focus on the games and the accessories like the cell phone feature they promised and the camara feature also promised in electronic monthly
if your happy and you know it kill your self.......click bang

the monkey stole my psp and now im stupid

But the problem with your statment is that most software is thrid party support...not from Sony. Konami, Capcom, Squaresoft...etc. They are the ones that should be held responsible for that problem. (Then again...you could say developers are restricted because of programming for the machine, but I would put it more on them than Sony.)

pokemon games are good, but i hate how they make you cheat...in order to get them rare people you need a damn gameshark which is gay, and you gotta go to special events and download them, that sucks..

i recently went to EB and saw that new pokeon on the DS, and it is stupid as hell, playing as a pokemon..they only have 15min time trials at EB?
