There are some websites that will let you send and receive text messages over the internet. If you can find one that works with the PSP's web browser, then you can send and receive SMS anywhere you can get wifi.
-> still can't figure out whyi use 2 have this thing when i had vista that i would send text messages on my computer with an internet connection. so i wanted to know if they had one for psp
There was a program coded in lua a while back called TEXT2FONE that lets you text message. Im pretty sure you will have no trouble finding it through google.

he's talking about text messaging, not instant messaging.
i think web browser is the only way
yea because there is no sim reader/antenna in the psp
It is really simple to do. The best way to accomplish this, is to make an email account with Google Mail (gmail.google.com). And fortunately for us, the nice people over at google made a website specially designed for mobile devices. The link to that special site is: m.google.com . Pretty straight forward huh? Last thing you need to do is tell the person you want to contact to send a text message to your gmail, and since every cellphone has an email address that can be contacted through an email, you can reply back right from your PSP! I would advise saving the address to contacts because trying to remember all the contacts is kind of annoying.
If you want to send sms text messages to a mobile phone, you can put the number of the person (must include the area code) before one of the following addresses depending on the phone company that person has.
Example:7026966969@vtext.com (@vtext.com would be for Verizon)
You can find the rest of the addresses at this website: freesms.1888usa.com
That works if you only need to send SMS to people in the US, but what about those in other countries?
-> still can't figure out whyim not sur about other countries. but i will keep working with this and update soon
i dont know the credibility of this program, but search on dl.qj.net for pspsms. i believe its a plugin that works with LuaPlayer(which is a separate app) and it allows you to basically send txt over the internet. similar to the websites where u can do that.
