Default Ultimate Emulator FAQ v1.4

Ultimate Emulator FAQ v1.4

Contents:
1: Emulation info
2: F.A.Q
3: Readme-archive

Ok, so it seems that even though most of these questions have been answered through several threads its time to end it all and write the ultimate emulator faq so people will get help easy and we can stop naggin at all the new people that are too lazy to find the answers :)

So here goes!

What Do I Need To Run (insert homebrew/emu here)????

What you need is exactly this, no more no less;
  • A Sony PSP
  • A Computer with the needed homebrews (links added in the end)
  • A USB Cable Connector connecting your PSP with your computer.
What Is This Friggin' Firmware Shit??

The firmware is the little operative system (OS) that makes your PSP tick, and if you're lucky (like me) you have the first release of the PSP, namely the PSP with firmware 1.0. This firmware lets you run all homebrews and whatnot without much hassle. The next release of the firmware was version 1.5, and in this firmware they tried to block users to install custom programs that was not digitally signed by sony. Luckily this got hacked by PSP-Dev Team and all you peeps with a PSP 1.5 can also enjoy the wonderful world of homebrews. And for a long time it was quiet and the new 2.0 firmware came out. The homebrew scene was stomped and for long it didn't look bright at all. Then new hope arised when team WAB allegedly found a way to downgrade even to 1.0. This was proven to be fake and it looked dark again but out of nowhere (?) came team MPH and released their 2.0->1.5 downgrader and all was fine again. After that was a very long and dark period with countless fake downgraders. Then came an exploit via the game GTA:LS and a way to run code through the save states. Fanjita then released an EBOOT loader for 2.0, 2.01 and 2.5. After that came the downgrader for 2.6->1.5 wich made alot of users happy and the homebrew scene sparked to new life again.

I Just Bought My PSP And I Don't Know What Firmware My PSP Has, Please Help!

Well that is not a hard task at all! Just boot up your PSP and go to:

Settings->System Settings->System Information

And here you will see:

System Software Version 1.** (1.00, 1.50, 1.51, 1.52) or 2.** (2.00, 2.01, 2.50, 2.60, 2.70, 2.71)

What Exactly Is A Homebrew??

A homebrew is what it sounds like, a program that someone have made by them selves, and not by Sony. A homebrew is not only Emulators, its all kind of programs that are more or less useful. Lately tons of small useful programs has found their way to the PSP and everyday new and interesting features are discovered and exploited. Be sure to check out PSPUpdates for daily updates about everything psp-related.

Whats Up With This KXploit??

Now if you hava a PSP with a firmware version of 1.50 you may also have to download and install Loader KXploit Direct Loader, but this is only if the released homebrew is originally written for 1.0. Nowadays most homebrews is released pre-coded for 1.5. In that the case just use the very nifty drag+drop method for installing homebrews
Kxploit also comes shipped with a tutorial in .pdf so i will not go further into how to use it.

But im guessing you are all here for the Emulators so lets get to the fun bit if you now have what it takes!

What Is An Emulator And Where Can I Find It??

An Emulator is a little nifty program that can emulate, simulate, another type of system on the system you are currently running. There are tons of emulators for about every system avaliable, but for the PSP the most common emulators consist of;

Gameboy/Gameboy Color
Emulator: Homers RIN GB/GBC v3.2
Roms: *.gb / *.gbc

Gameboy Advanced
Emulator: PSPGBA 1.1 | PSPVBA V1.0.6 *update*
Roms: *.gba

Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom
Emulator: NesterJ NES Emulator v1.20beta2 *update* | Unofficial NesterJ 1.07 r2b | PSPFCEultra release 2
Roms: *.nes

Super Nintendo/Super Famicom
Emulator: snes9xTYL 0.4.2 *update* | uo_Snes9x v0.02y32 | SNES9X v0.03a
Roms: *.smc, *.sfc, *.fig

Nintendo 64
Emulator: Daedalus R5 *update*
Roms: *.z64, *.zip

NeoGeo / NeoGeo CD
Emulator: ngPsp v1.3.1 | NeoCDPSP v0.5u4 | NeoGeo CDZ Emulator v0.5 Beta 2 *update*
Roms: *.zip

SCUMMVM
Emulator: ScummVM-PSP 0.9.0 *update*
Roms: *.* (not really roms, uses original games as the pc version of SCUMMVM)

Sega Master System/Gamegear
Emulator: SMSPlus 1.2 | EmuSMS v1.0 *update*
Roms: *.bin

Sega Genesis/Megadrive
Emulator: DGEN 1.60 *update*
Roms: *.bin

MAME Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator
Emulator: PSPMame Release 0.4 Fixes | MAME4ALL PSP v0.0.3 *update*
Roms: *.zip

What Is A Rom And Where Can I Find It??

I will not provide information regarding the obtaining of roms, as they are considered illegal, use your imagination..

OK, So Now I Just Wanna Play!!

Yes we are now ready to start playing, you should have all that you need now, so just start up your PSP and go to;

Settings->USB Connection

After you activate it your computer should have autodetected your PSP. It can be found under My Computer or Explorer as "Removable Media" and a drive-letter assigned by windows.
Go to it and you should see a folder named "PSP", open it.
In this folder, if it not already exists, create a folder named "GAME" (whithout the brackets)
And now depending on your FW version this is what you need to do:
Firmware 1.0
This is simple, first create a new directory named after what system you are emulating (for your own sake dont name them names that you will have hard time remembering whats in what dir.) and simply drag and drop the emulator+roms into that directory, you are now all done! YAY!

Firmware 1.5
For Firmware 1.5 you just have to use the same method as for firmware 1.0 or follow the tutorial supplied with the release of KXploit.

Firmware 2.0
For Firmware 2.0 you have to download and install Fanjitas eboot launcher.

Firmware2.01+
For Firmware 2.01+ you have to download and install Fanjitas eboot launcher and use it with the GTA:LS exploit.

For more information regarding homebrew on 2.0+ please read Windravers 2.0+ homebrew guide (top concern)
For homebrew packs ready for download check out PSP_Bro's homebrew packs:
1.5 Homebrewpack (Xbox 360 games)
2.0 Homebrewpack (TBA)
2.5 Homebrewpack (TBA)

Default Ultimate Emulator FAQ v1.4

F.A.Q (frequently asked questions)

Question 1: I Have FW version <insert your version>, Can I Run Homebrews?? *update*

If you have FW version 1.51/1.52:
Update to 2.0 (not 2.01!) and then downgrade to 1.5 using the MPH downgrader or stay at 2.0 for most homebrew.
Then you can run homebrew! Yatta!

If you have FW version 2.0:
You can run homebrew via Fanjitas EBOOT loader, or downgrade using the MPH downgrader.
Then you can run homebrew! Yatta!

If you have FW version 2.01+:
You can run homebrew via Fanjitas EBOOT loader coupled with GTA:LS and the GTA:LS exploit or downgrade using proper methods (search the forums) to either 1.5 or 2.0.

Question 2: I Only Have 32MB Memorycard, Can I Still Use Homebrews??

Yes, without a doubt! You might not be able to emulate all systems and have all games at the same time but fear not, 32mb will get you far if its only emulators you are interested in..

Question 3: I Cant Get KXploit To Work!!

Everything is explained in the tutorial that comes with the release, make sure you have Acrobat Reader installed.
But if you are one of the lazy types read this: http://www.psp-hacks.com/psp-kxploit-howto.php
Still cant get it to work? Read this fine kxploit tutorial (Hello Everyone) by shalted, now you should definitly be able to play on your 1.50 PSP

Question 4: Can I Use Emulators/Homebrews On 2.0 FW?

As of this moment you can run some emulators on 2.0 via the 2.0 Eboot Loader v0.9 but since we still are held back because of being stuck in user mode. This is still under development mind you. An alternative if you do not want to risk bricking your psp with the MPH Downgrader (even though no reports of bricked psps yet).

Question 5: Why wont <your homebrew> start? I've tried everything!?

Make sure the homebrew you are trying to run is written for the firmware you are currently using.
A homebrew written for 1.5 will not run on a psp with 1.0 and vice versa.

Question 6: Why are my SNES roms playing so slow!?

1: The PSP is downclocked from the factory because of the battery-life to 222MHz, but with most emulators you can bump up the speed to 333MHz. This is relatively unharmful for your psp, it will get a bit warmer and consume more battery though.
2: Increase the Frame Skip to a level wich feels comfortable (usually around 3-4 skips).
3: Turn off 'transparency'.

Question 7: After the software and roms are installed and playing fine, can you then upgrade to ver 2.0 or ver 2.50 after that and still have the emulator working properly with the upgraded FW or will it stop working?

No that will not work since its not an install you do, everytime you run it it gets checked by the firmware to se if if it's digitally signed by Sony. Newer firmwares is yet to be hacked so the answer is simply no.

Question 8: What is this SCUMMVM?? And what games does it support?

I will redirect ALL questions related to SCUMMVM and its games to its homepage at http://www.scummvm.org/

Question 9: Can I run the EBOOT loader on my 2.01+ without GTA:LS?? *update*

No you cannot, since you have to execute the exploit through the game itself.

Suggestions/Improvements/Spelling/Whathaveyou are apreciated!

ADDITIONS:

from Jrmdb3
Now noobs wont look some dumb asking "is tehre homebrew for 2.xx??"...cuz guess waht..THERE IS!!!now ALL psp firmwares are capable of running vast amounts of homebrew..heres what pspudpates had to say:

Quote:
Thatââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s right, the day weâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ve all been waiting for has finally arrived! Thanks to the fantastic work by our forum moderator Fanjita and his coding companion Ditlew, it is now possible to play vast amounts of homebrew programs and emulators on every PSP in the world, including those with 2.60 Firmware! Thanks to their monumental achievement, every PSP in the world is capable of playing homebrew!

We here at PSPUpdates and QJ.net are proud to be the first to bring you an exclusive release of eLoader BETA which now works on 2.01, 2.50, and 2.60 Firmware! With this ground breaking program, you are able to load the many of the existing homebrew games, applications, and emulators that are already available for earlier versions of PSP firmware.

You can find a complete list of working/not working homebrew [here]. But just to get you started, here are a few popular homebrew programs that are known to work so you can get started experiencing the full potential of PSP homebrew:

Super Nintendo Emulator
Sega Genesis Emulator
Atari Lynx Emulator
Vortex
Throttle-X
Squarez
Spider Solitaire
PSPRhythm
FileAssistant

And for all of the PSP enthusiasts reading this, here is a special message from Fanjita himself:

I just want to say thank you to all of the PSP lovers out there for supporting us. Keep checking back here at PSPUpdates -- our goal is to continue to give all PSP owners with all firmware versions the ability to play homebrew.
Thats a quote from www.pspupdates.com
And for everyone who is not really into homebrew ...YOU CAN EXPECT A MAJOR UPFDATE from Sony VERY soon!!
Fanjita is a god right now..thank you fanjita for all your time. I'm sure I speak for everyone hear when i say this. We know how hard it is (well some of us) to do this..and we know how much work youve putten into this..so thank you!

Default Ultimate Emulator FAQ v1.4

Here's a full length discription(although jsh's seemed perfectly fine) I know you already have Kxploit but this is a message I have saved and use alot let's see if this work's for you)-

Alright First you need to download the KXploit tool on www.psp-hacks.com then pendening on wheather you want snes games or nes games you'll have download the emulator for the system you want games from you can also download either of those on www.psp-hacks.com. The unless you alrady hve it you'l need Win Rar. To get this go to ww.Downloads.com and time Wrar in the serch box the top result is the one you wanna pick. (Note:Save all downloads or it won't work). Ok, now open KXploit (by this time you need your psp hooked up to the computer through a USB) name the the thng either snes or nes pending on which it is. Now Click the three little (...) and it bring up a browse window find the Snes/Nes file you downloaded earlier, by now the file should look like stack of books because of the Win Rar which is good. Open it and click on the version 1.0,1.5 pending on what your PSP's version is and open it(Note: If you donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t have version of 1.50 or lower it wonââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t work. Then make sure the drive is set on whatever drive your psp is for example C:,A:,D:,etc. and make sure thats right. Then click the generate files button and as soon as it's done exit all the stuff you have open. Now setup complete to get other emultors just use the KXploit and make everything the same as before just the differant emulato file. Alright thats all of that now for the games you should go to www.google.com ,Then drag the file into the your PSP file then into the game folder and finally drag it into The systems folder(snes game into the snes folder) make sure you put it in the folder WITHOUT! the little percent% symbol. And your set just do the same thing from there on out. Although I do warn you some game won't work the'll just turn your psp off some game version's will do thi also but if one dose it it dosen't mean they all will. This dosen't mes up your PSP you'll just have to turn it back on and delete that from the game Snes,Nes,etc file. I don't think I missed anything but if you have a quesion just post it on the same thread I'll read it and post the answer. Best of Luck!
