Default how to backup high quality dvds to psp

Update Sept 29th/06
- Changed image examples over to imageShack hosting.
Update Sept 21st/06
- Buddy at my work used tutorial and found a few minor issues he corrected me with. I updated the tutorial slightly on his recommendations.
Updated Sept 18th/06
- Added Images
- Added some color (for Rob )

I've done quite a bit of research on this and thought i'd share it all with you guys. For a while i've wanted to take my existing dvds i own and make a compressed (due to memory duo constraints) high quality copy of it that would fit my psp screen.

I have now successfully backed up and created 3 beautiful working movies that run flawlessly.. They are high quality, surround sound, run on the 111/222Mhz base setting (so no overclocking needed), and they have been resized to fit the 480x272 diminsons of the psp.

Here is how i did it:

Programs required:
1. dvd shrink (http://http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html) will give you instructions on how to obtain it). It is not illegal to have so long as you agree to the licensing agreement and only use this for your own backup purposes as i did.
2. DVD43 http://www.dvd43.com/ neat little tool that is not essential at all, It adds a little happy face to your system clock tray at the bottom of windows. When you insert a DVD, it will allow your computer to override a little more copy protection that could be in place when using dvd shrink. This tool is not nessisary, but very nice to have.
3. PSPlayermt (http://pspupdates.qj.net/PSPlayerMT-...g/49/aid/11016) Some of the best homebrew i've seen as it allows the psp to play all the video extensions you couldn't before (such as divx and xvid). I backed up all my movies to xvid as it is a slightly higher compression. For example... I backed up "Meet the Parents" and it only took up 400MB. This is full screen on the psp (widescreen is assumed when you back these movies up) full dolby 5.1 sound and 30-40fps.
4. Winmenc (google it) This is the tool that will convert your extracted/decrypted dvd on your hardrive to the format of choice (Xvid is my preference).

Hopefully you all have read this far and i still have everyones intrest!

You need to first back up your DVD movie of choice to your hardrive... This can take alot of space! Be sure to have at least 10 gigs free (to avoid disk swapping during the process). the final movie will take up about 3-6 gigs depending on its length and the audio quality you chose.

Do the following:
1-A. Load DVD43 if you downloaded it.
1-B. Load up DVD Shrink (my tutorial was created during the time DVD Shrink 3.2 existed... screens may not look the same in the future).

We need to configure DVD Shrink first... once this is done, you can skip this step in the future.

1-B-A. Open: "Edit" -> "Preferences..." and on the "Output Files" Tab, UNCHECK "Split VOB files into 1GB size chunks".

1-B-B. Save your changes by clicking "OK"

1-C. Place your DVD you want to back up into your DVD ROM.
1-C-A. Click "Open Disk".
1-C-B. Choose your DVD Drive from the dropdown list.
1-D. Click the "Re-Author" tab and browse to the DVD you loaded in step 1-C
1-E. Drag the "Title" that exists beneath the "Main Movie" category over to the empty box on the left. This will take a 3 to 10 minutes as it loads subsections of the movie into memory.
Note: Nothing has been extracted at this point!
http://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?i...skbrwsehk3.jpg
1-F. Click the "Compression Settings" Tab
1-G. UNCHECK ALL the boxes EXCEPT the one you want. Subtitles are not applicable to what were doing so you might as well uncheck all of those (to save space). You MUST leave at least 1 audio stream (unless you like watching a movie in mute). I can't stress enough to only check 1 audio option. Checking multiple options will confuse the next program we need to use. The final product will only be using 1 audio stream anyways.... so once again.. only choose 1 audio selection.

You are now almost ready to decrypt the movie to your hardrive. This takes a while... I have an AMD 3200 with 1 Gig of ram, and it takes me 40 Min. This can very on different systems and different DVD Roms. My DVD rom is actually quite slow... so the process for you guys might go faster.
1-H. Press "Backup" on the toolbar above and wait for the message below. At that point you can proceed to Step 2.

This part is only tricky if you begin to tweak the final results. If your reading this post, it is assumed you have 3-6 GIG .VOB file successfully extracted from your DVD ROM.

2-A Load up Winmenc
2-B This program has MANY configurations and options... But the easiest way to explain how to set it all up would be to simply press "Load Profile" at the bottom.
2-C From your profile section... choose this option: "[PSP AVI] DIVX 480x272 600kbps, MP3 44.1kHz 96kbps.ini" which has almost all the settings we need already. Press "Open" on this setting.
2-D Click on the "Video" tab and change the type from "DivX" to "XviD".

2-D-A This step is optional.. but i just went ahead and saved this as a new profile to simplify life in the future. Back up this .ini file incase someday in the future they ever remove these ini files from the "built in" installation.

You should not have to make any more changes at this point if you had followed all my instructions from step 1. If you violated my "audio" advice, then you will need to click on the "Audio" tab and adjust the "Audio Stream" option. Feel free to tweak further, but i can promise you that the settings as is now will work beautifully!

2-E Click on the "Batch" Tab
2-F Press "Add Files...".
2-G Browse to where you extracted your movie to. It will be one gigantic VOB file. and press "Open". The file should appear in the list after this.

2-H Adjust the output folder at the bottom to another location (different then where the VOB file is) that you can encrypt your new movie file to. You'll only need a location that has 600 Megs at the most... all 1.5 hr movies are usually under 400MB at the end.

2-I Press the "Encode" Button at the bottom and wait patiently. This process will based entirely on your cpu speed. On my AMD 3200, it took 42 min to rip a 1.5 hr movie. So once again.. just be patient.

NOTE: It is not uncommon to see a CRC error during this process.... it won't obstruct the movie in any way or fashion... There is litterally nothing you can do about it except wait for a newer version of dencrypt.exe (WinMenc is merely a front end to this tool). I've seen this error several times through out my learning of how to do this, and it has NEVER obstructed the movie in any way.

ALTERNATIVE SETTINGS:
For a slightly larger XviD file, you can increase the sound/video throughput/quality and match the screenshots i posted below:

When the process is done... you've now successfully backed up your movie to a format that will work on the PSP that is higher compressed and still runs beautifully. I love that XviD compresses the files to such a small size. The more backups i can fit on my memory stick the merrier.

I'm going to assume you guys already know how to copy stuff onto your psp.
If thats a problem for some of you.. i suggest you read your manual!

Installing PSPlayerMT to your v1.5 firmwared PSP is the same as every other program you've installed...
copy: "__SCE__PSPlayerMT" and "%__SCE__PSPlayerMT" into your GAME subfolder.

You can copy the movie you created absolutely anywhere on the PSP. i just created a new folder in the PSP dir called "MOVIE". You can copy it anywhere as it won't affect how your psp operates whatso ever. the PSPlayerMT comes with a browser, so you end up browsing to your movie anyhow.

The author of "PSPlayerMT" states his controls like this:
How to use the program:

Left Shoulder - start from beginning
Right Shoulder - Go to Menu
circle - select the file
triangle - zoom
square - displays info
home - quit
left dpad - rewind
right dpad - fast forward

However, i've found them to behave slightly differently then that...

How to use the program:

Left Shoulder - Skip Back (about 20 min)
Right Shoulder - Skip Forward (about 20 min)
circle - select the file
triangle - (this doesn't work)
square - displays info
home - quit
X - Return to shell to select another movie
left dpad - rewind (like 10 seconds)
right dpad - fast forward (like 10 seconds)

I hope this tutorial helps you guys... I have a few more blocks i reserved below so i can expand in time. Maybe show how to backup UMD movies...
I will get you all photos the second i find a location that can host some of the screenshots i took.

I tried to be very specific on what to do, so if you follow everything you should have amazing movies to watch as i've created.

It can be a long process... but it gets easy to do once you've done it once or twice... so be patient... set the dvd up and go play PS2 or go do something else while your pc is grinding away.

the point is that he should have added to the existing thread instead of making a new one that already exists in the wrong section

on a mac, all you do is put a dvd in, run handbrake, rip it to mp4, and put it on your psp using iPSP. it's that easy.

and that thing works with 1.5 homebrew.

on windows, you have to do a lot. :]
