    okay.
let me just start off by stating that i know absolutely FUCK ALL about PSPs...
haha and with that out of the way, let me try and make this simple for you.

    i have a psp 1000 with ofw 6.38.
i just want custom firmware/to be able to run ISO/CSOs from the memory card.
how the hell do i go about this?
i've read so much and tried to grasp it all but i just get frustrated - there appears to be so many methods and programs etc.
do i need a pandora battery? what exactly is a magic memory stick? do i even need these things?
ugh.. ds was a lot easier to mod haha
    help a noob out?

    thanks!

nope. if you just want to play iso/cso on your psp, you need to have a cfw(custom firmware, ie. ME/PRO cfws) installed on your psp, and have an "ISO" folder at the root and put all the iso/cso in that folder to be able to play it. since you case, i don't recommend staying in your current firmware (6.38). i suggest you updating to the latest one.
    get these:

sony 6.60 OFW: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service OR update via "System Update"
    cfw 6.60ME-1.6 (ofw version) : Hotfile.com: One click file hosting: 6.60 ME-1.6 (OFW Version).zip

    >extract the first file, copy UPDATE folder into file dir ms0:/PSP/GAME and run it . wait to finish.
    >extract second file, copy installer folder in to the same file dir. and run it. press x to install cfw.

    peace~

I'd like to know if there are still chances of bricking using this method (even if battery is fully charged/AC adapter plugged in), and if so some tips to make it as safe as possible. I'm relatively new to PSP hacking and have a PSP-1004 running ofw 6.38.

i also have the psp-e1004 aka PSP STREET.

i suggest you update to 6.60 ofw first and the installing 6.60 LME-1.6

that's what i installed and it works great

about the bricking: i did not brick mine while doing it, and if u pm me your email address i will send you a tutorial on how to install the CFW

^^^^ What kind of psp do you have?

I would do this if I owned a 3k psp(Note that you can install a perm CFW on 6.20 OFW but I don't know alot about that and don't feel comfortable showing you how).
So if you want a full CFW do NOT do this guide. A lite CFW is just as good as a full just you will have to run the launcher when you turn the psp on from the OFF state.

You can either update to 6.60 OFW by system update or you can manually download it yourself. If you do system update with the psp skip these first steps.(also skip if your already on 6.60 OFW)

    1) Download and extract the 6.60 OFW and keep it where you can find it: 6.60 OFW - Downloads - PSPMOD.com - PSP Forum, Hack PSP, PSV Hacks, PS Vita Hack, PSVita
    2) Go to USB connection on the psp and pull up the drive that the psp is connected to on the computer.
    3) Now open the "PSP" folder and then the "GAME" folder and then in that "GAME" folder make a new folder named "UPDATE" (all caps)
    4) Put the 660 OFW EBOOT (from the download) in that update folder and then exit USB mode.
    5) Go to Memory Stick in the GAME section on the PSP'S XMB.

    Now to install LCFW.

    1) Download the LCFW from this link and have it ready: 6.60LME-1.6 - Downloads - PSPMOD.com - PSP Forum, Hack PSP, PSV Hacks, PS Vita Hack, PSVita
    2) Go to USB connection on the psp and open the "GAME" folder. (If you don't know where to find this folder look at step 3 above)
    3) In the download there should be two folders named "Installer" and "Launcher" put those two folders into the "GAME" folder.
    4) Exit USB mode and go to the memory stick icon under the game section in the XMB and run the "Installer" first and then after reboot run the "Launcher"
    5) Now whenever you turn the psp ON from the OFF state you will have to run the "LAUNCHER" to get back onto CFW since this is a LITE CFW.

    Enjoy!
