help updating to latest firmware PSP1003 software v2.81

Hi all,
wonder if someone could point me in the right direction
trying to update the firmware on my psp 1003 to latest version its currently showing version 2.81
have got the official latest update on memory card but when i run it i get the following

the game could not be started (80020148)

is the jump from 2.81 to 6.60 to high do i need something installed inbetween for the higher firmware to be installed
have searched forums for the error and most results are when games are started and not trying to update firmware,

Have downloaded Hellcats and not sure which bit to follow
this?
Flashing a fresh 1.5 ofw to your psp 1k only using hellcats

1. install hellcats as mentioned below according to your psp
2. download the 1.5 eboot from here 150.PBP - PSP, Official, Firmware, 1.50
3. rename the eboot.pbp to 150.pbp and copy to the root of memory stick.
4. run hellcats now
5. select the option to "Install fresh ofw 1.50"

or

2. For systems with 1.5 ofw and the old DA firmwares(SE/OE systems)

1.extract the Hellcats archive
2.For 1.5 ofw systems, open the 1.5 firmware folder
copy the 2 sub-folders "%__SCE__rflash" and" __SCE__rflash" to your GAME folder
copy and paste the 500.pbp file into the root of your memory stick

on the second one i couldnt find the 500.php file so i am a bit lost
