Modding a 2.81 fat psp help please

Hi, new here and glad i found a forum dedicated for this as im a little stuck. You guys seem to really know your stuff.

I recently took out my old psp as I just bought a few games on it for very cheap. but cant play any of them as they say I have to upgrade my firmware to at least 3.52 and so on. I was going to upgrade but have always wanted to mod my psp for emulators and so forth.

I have been looking into it for a couple days and have found that the internet is so saturated with files and guides and 3 different versions of a psp I am finding it a little difficult to understand were to start for my one.

I don't want to go down the Pandora battery route as I have read that nowadays it is possible to mod my psp with just software.

But what I have worked out so far im not sure if im correct, so can someone at least tell me if im in the right direction.

I have a 2.81 psp 1003.

in order to begging modding i would first need to upgrade my OFW to 5.03

Then I would find chickHEN R2 and run it on my psp 5.03

This point I get a little confused

I need Hellcat's Recovery Flasher V1.60 and 5.0 firmware. Why do i need to install 5.0 firmware when ive already upgraded it to 5.03?

Can someone tell me if heading in the right direction please, and if you have any links to more up to date software for it that would be appreciated.
