I have the newest firmware, 5.01. Is it possible to downgrade or install custom firmware? Any of the custom firmwares would be great. I don't know which one would be right for me, but I basically want to use my PSP as sort of a Palm PC, PDA, etc.. which would you all recommend? And is there anyone currently working on a 5.01 custom firmware, so that way I know whethe4r or not I should keep updating.

You need pandora's battery first of all.

Ok, thanks for the reply man. I've done a little research on the Pandora's Battery but I can't quite grasp the concept of what it does, and how to do it in simple terms. What exactly mus I have hardware wise, and how to do I do it with the hardware that I'll need?

    I currently have a 4 GB stick in,and a battery. It's the older PSP 1001 model.(The thick ones)

You need to make the 'magic memory stick' which technically is the downgrader/custom firmware installer.

Theres a few around here, and we have some guides which should help you make that, theres also a lot of programs out there to do it for you, like so.

For the battery, you either need to make one physically (opening the battery, cutting a pin, check in hardware tutorials), buy one from Datel, or have someone with custom firmware make you one.

What it does is this. The battery 'hack' boots the PSP via the memory card, instead of the internal flash, the files on the stick boot up before any psp security is loaded, thus you can downgrade or install custom firmware on any psp (well, used to be every psp, some slims are incompatible atm).

Thanks again bud, you're helpin me out A LOT. I've almost understood what I need to do. As farr as the 'Magic Memory Stick', it has to be a seperate memory stick, correct?

And Pandora's battery, you mentioned cutting a cable: is cutting the cable tough? Is the PSP able to short circuit while using the battery if I cut the wire?

Also, the main question I have is Do I need a designated(seperated) memory stick and a battery just designed for this purpose? And after the process is completed, I would stop using the battery and the stick and switch back to my old one?

You do not need a separate battery/stick, the newest version of DC (pandora's battery memory stick software) designates a button you hold to boot into pandora's battery, otherwise it boots normally. So once you do this you'll be fine.
