Generally speaking yes, but it depends on your PSP model. Is it a PSP 3000? If so that is totally unhackable, if it's a PSP 2000 (slim) or 1000 (fat) then it depends on your motherboard. Do you know what firmware the PSP had on it when it was first bought?

If it's a PSP 1000 then it is highly likely it will be moddable via a Pandora Battery and Magic Memory Stick. There are only a tiny number of PSP1000 that come with the unhackable motherboards.

If you sent it to Sony i doubt they will change the firmware, since it is already on the latest version.

You can make them both yourself, see the first two links in my signature.

If you know someone else older that knows a bit about technical things they might help, otherwise you could buy one from a few places online, have a look around the forums, i think even this site itself does now.

Don't be taken in by anyone that just posts and says "buy it from us", wait for people to back that place up, there are a lot of rip off merchants about.

Lots of people use them and they do seem legit (ie you do actually get the product) so yes, that is one good option.

Yes if you look through that first link in my sig, going past the parts about making them, you should see the actual process of installing custom firmware.

I've never done it myself but i don't think it's much more work than putting both in your PSP, booting up and following the on screen instructions,
