Hello, O wise and venerable sages of the Portable Playstation.

What would be the best way to go about updating a PSP 1000 from 3.51 M33-7 to the most recent CFW?
Noob-friendly directions would also be most welcome.

Sure, I will write up a mini-guide. Please stand by.

Normally I would tell someone to search but these firmwares are so old that the info is quite outdated and hard to find.

    -----------------------------------------------

This is from the 3.52M33 installation readme. Now the difficult thing here is going to be finding the files. There are a lot of dead links out there.

    Download the 3.52M33CREATOR package here - 3.52 M33CREATOR

Download the 1.50 OFW EBOOT here - 150.PBP

Download the 3.52 OFW EBOOT here - 352.PBP

1 - If you are under official 1.50 PSP firmware, copy kxploitpatcher and kxploitpatcher% folders from "1.50only/" of this download to your "ms0:/PSP/GAME/" and use it.(This does not apply to you.)

2 - (This is where you will start.)Once done it, or if you are under any Special/Open Edition/M33, copy the M33CREATOR folder to "ms0:/PSP/GAME150"

3 - Download official 3.52 eboot, rename it to 352.PBP and place it the "ms0:/PSP/GAME150/M33CREATOR/" folder

4 - Download official 1.50 eboot, rename it to 150.PBP and place it in the "ms0:/PSP/GAME150/M33CREATOR/" folder

5 - Go to Games/Memory Stick on your PSP, and execute "3.52 M33 CREATOR". Once finished, it will go back to the XMB. (This will take a long ass time. You'll think it's bricked, it hasn't. Just be really patient.)

6 - Go again to Games/Memory Stick on your PSP, and execute "3.52 M33UPDATE". You'll have to press X to agree to the installation.

7 - When finished, press X to shut down and reboot manually.

    8 - Enjoy your 3.52 M33 ;

You can't update directly to 5.00M33 from here. There are a few more steps.
    ------------------------------------

Now, to get you on 3.52M33-4. You must be on 3.52M33-3 or 3.52M33-4 in order to go directly to 5.00M33. This will be much easier than the last step.

    Download the -4 update here - 3.52M33-4

Just place the M33Update4 folder into the ms0:/PSP/GAME150 folder and then run it from the XMB.

You should now be on 3.52M33-4. Just to System -> System Settings -> System Information and make sure. If so, onto the next step.
    -------------------------------------

    Download 500.pbp from here - 500.PBP

    Download the 5.00M33-6 update here - 5.00M33-6

Take the update file and place the UPDATE folder into PSP/GAME. It will look like ms0:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE/

Now, take the 500.pbp and place it in the UPDATE folder as well. Run that from the XMB.

    Now you're done!

That would work for the M33 users, but now we've gone beyond that and the Gen generation has come around. Btw, you really don't need 5.00 M33 firmwares to play the new games. I play them fine with my 4.01 M33-2. I have proof: I can play Obscure just fine. I can also play Undead Knights by editing my UMD version to something else. Its Sony NC something... I don't remember the setting's full name.

Okay, so if I update to 3.52, I'll be able to use the Network Update to update further?

I remember that the Network Update came out just a little while after I last updated.

I also still have my copy of Lumines. great game.

Just so the OP is aware, I will be editing my reply above until it is a complete guide. This is a somewhat tedious process.

No, network update wasn't implemented until 3.80M33.

What I'm going to do is provide instructions to get you to 3.52M33-4. From that point you can go directly to 5.00M33. Just hold up a second and check my first reply after a few minutes. I'll try to find links to these old files too.
