If your friend's Phat PSP's firmware is 5.03 or below, then it's hacakble by using Pandora battery or ChickHen. If the firmware is above 5.03, then you'll can only use Pandora only.

Well you can wait till the 6.20 save game exploit comes out. It should work for all versions of the PSP. You will then be able to install CFW.

I suggest you buy a Pandora Battery though. They are very cheap and are very worth the money. It can be used for downgrading, unbricking, etc.

yup - get a pb. all phats are hackable, regardless of its firmware version.

as an earlier post pointed out, there are several different methods in installing cfw onto a phat with an official firmware. the different methods was primarily dependant on what OFW version was installed. one method was to downgrade to OFW 1.50 and then install CFW, another method was to update to OFW 5.03 and the ever present PB + MMS method.

since the OFW of your phat is above OFW 5.03, the method to install CFW onto that phat is by using PB and MMS. it doesn't matter if you update the OFW to the latest 6.20 now or not - because you can install CFW onto that phat anyway. with OFW 6.20 you can enjoy the latest carrot sony provides...

the guides here are good, straightforward and easy to understand...

i reckon don't bother softmodding the original psp battery but to get a cheap after-market pb...
