The newest firmware is 6.60. There is also a custom firmware for it called 6.60ME-1.3 if that is what you want. Just Google for "PSP 6.60 update" and download that. Put the update into the PSP/UPDATE folder on your memory stick and then run it from the XMB.

I'm pretty new to this myself, but just fully modded my 2001 the other day and it was rediculously easy.

Check it's serial number to make sure is does not start with HU2, if it doesn't then just update it normally to 6.60 (settings>system update):
-download the 6.60ME-1.3 (6.60ME-1.3 (OFW Version) - Downloads - Sony PSP MODS and Hacks Forums).
-hook the PSP up to your PC through the USB cord (and select USB Connection mode if it does not automatically)
-put me_installer in the PSP>GAMES folder.
-Unhook from USB and run the me_installer on PSP (will show up as an update).

    Then that was basically it

CRSZILLA, I'm unsure if the first step is necessary for you, but I'm trying to keep things simple. If you want OFFICIAL firmware with no homebrew capability, then just do step 1. If you want the latest CUSTOM firmware, with homebrew capabilities amongst other additions, then complete steps 1 and 2.

    1. Upgrading to 6.60 (official firmware from Sony):
Simply connect your PSP to your computer over USB, download this and copy the UPDATE folder contained in it to ms0://PSP/GAME, where ms0 is the location of the PSP memory stick on your computer. Disconnect your PSP from your computer and run the 6.60 update which should now be on your memory stick. Follow the instructions and you should be up to 6.60 in no time. You can now delete the UPDATE folder from your PSP.

    2. Installing 6.60 ME 1.3 (custom firmware):
If you wish to install this CFW, enabling homebrew and backups amongst other things, then download this and copy the UPDATE folder contained within to the PSP. As above, run it from the PSP and you will be updated to 6.60 ME 1.3. Be aware that the installer will download the 6.60 update as part of the install process.

The iso's and cso's etc should all remain intact, as you're not formatting the memory stick in the process. You CAN delete everything on there before you do it, but there's no need to if you don't want to. As for running the update as the PSP is currently, yes you can, but the link x2plyx and myself gave you is for running on 6.60 OFW, if you wish to run from GEN-D then its a slightly different download the link for which is in my signature on the bottom left. Update to 6.60 OFW first, or run it how it is, entirely your preference, just letting you know its a different updater for each case.

Hm that's pretty strange, i'm probably not the best person to give advice on that since i've only had a couple days experience.. but maybe there's a confliction with the previous custom firmware you had on it?

Just to make sure, you updated it to the offical 6.60 before running the 6.60 ME right?

Might be able to run it's restore function and then try installing the official 6.60 again.

I think he's trying to run the 6.60OFW update while he's on 5.50GEN-D3.

Yeah that's out of my ballpark then. My only experience is with the 6.60ME on an unaltered PSP.

But i'd guess if there is a way to remove the 5.50GEN then go the 6.60 to 6.60ME route that'd probably be the easiest thing to do?

Funnily enough, I read that someone else had this problem also. There are 2 solutions, apparently you can do something in GEN-D that reinstalls OFW, and then you can update from there. The other option is to go into flash0, and edit something from versions.txt from whatever value it is to something like 5.00 so it passes that check next time you run the update.

    1. Press select in xmb and where it says usb device change it from memory stick to flash 0
    connect to computer.

    2. Don't touch anything in the usb, just search for the file, version.txt.

    3. Open it up and change release number from 9.90 to 5.50 or lower than 6.20 or anything you want your version number to be.

    4. Change usb device back to memory stick.

    5. Finish!

or im pretty sure if you goto the recovery menu under configuration disable version text it will solve your problem either will work
