EEEPC into a UMPC
I plan to take my new white EEEPC 701 and turn it into a UMPC. UMPCs are too goddamn expensive and I want one so I'm just going to build one. I plan to remove the hinge and work with the bottom section of the laptop. Plans to remove the keyboard/touchpad and entire top plastic section of the bottom part. Then I plan to put the screen where the keyboard is and create a new plastic piece that will go on top to cover everything up. I also plan to do the touchscreen mod to it. Is it worth it? EEEPC cost me 325usd. Closest UMPC I can find is about 700-800usd

Sweet man. If i could id do this myself. Ive wanted a UMPC for awhile now, but the cheapest ive come across is about £1100. Let me know how it goes.
Thinking of getting a EEEPC myself so i could do this sometime...

Now that is something that i would be willing to try to do myself.
That sounds like a really cool mod.

Is the user going to need to use a USB mouse?
Well, it looks sweet, I'm excited to see the finished product. |

Sorry, but I just have to comment on that concept pic - Vista probably ain't gonna happen. XPsp2 can be done with some tweaking though...
I'd personally suggest hitting up ebay for an old x-series thinkpad - 10" screen, easily torn down and rebuilt, and reliable as hell. I'm using an X22 right now that I bought for $50 (supervisor password, easy w/ the right hardware).
I will say, though, that I've been eying the eeepc for quite some time - That is, until I actually got to play with one at BJ's last week. Nice little machines, and the oled display is ohhh so tempting, but the thing just reminds me of a little kids toy laptop...Seems like far too much to pay for something I'd break in 3 days.

Vista's requirement is the 512 ram and that's it.
And I have XP SP2 on my laptop right now, no tweaks needed since the ISO's I've downloaded already came with everything ready.

I'm getting an estimate from a pro molder, see if I can get it done if the price is right or if I should try doing it myself (which will be pretty rough)

Dude, it took 2 and a half minutes to boot Vista on the example you gave, id have thrown it thru the window already. Modded XP FTW - U say you have ISO's with all the tweaks and bloatware removed? Xp does everything Vista does but in half the time. Its a no brainer
EDIT: its not 2 1/2 mins but still... http://www.youtube.com/v/83JGgxbH1B4

...I suppose I stand corrected. The point remains, though, that it still ain't the best idea. XP home needs a PII-233 w/64 mb - try running it on that though. Vista is a resource hog, and I don't see any merit in having a tablet with a 1.5 minute bootup time. Proof of concept is proof of concept, but as for actual usability I'd still stick with XP pro.

Just talked to my manufacture. Should have a prototype top shell coming soon. If anyone lives near the twin cities in Minnesota, I can hook you up with the person that I use. He's super cheap, good job and fast.
