I've searched through a couple of different threads for a little while now and I can't find an answer to my question, so I decided to create a thread and ask. Sooo...

How many different types of custom firmware are there? Is there only one CFW? I keep seeing all these threads talking about 3.9, 3.8, 3.71, 1.5, 3.52. 2.8, or whatever. I know most are talking about downgrading, but what should I be trying to downgrade too? Which one is the ideal one that I should be trying to get?

I'm asking this in advance. I'm planning on buying a PSP on Ebay, and the one I'm looking at says it comes with CFW already installed (it says 3.40 OE A) and another that says CFW 3.80 M33-5 with 1.5 KERNAL ADD-ON. WTF does that mean!?!

the different versions of cfw are just customized versions of the official sony firmware. so if you have a slim, 3.90 ofw lets you use skype. if you have 3.90m33, which is cfw, oyu can use skype and have cfw abilities, like playing backed up games from your memory stick, playing emulators, and other great homebrew. 1.5 kernel addon lets you play homebrew made for the 1.5 firmware. but only the phat psp can use the addon

So if I bought the fat PSP with 3.80m33-5 CFW with the kernel addon that's good and it should work for emulating and homebrew and the like?

It's a great thing. You can do more than a regular PSP can do, plus what the regular PSP can do. Modded > Not Modded.
