I have been trying to get chickHEN R2 to work so that I can follow this thread (PSP CFW ON ANY PHAT OR HACKABLE SLIM ( without pandora ) or 2nd psp and any fw) but so far [after more than 100 attempts] I have had no luck.

According to this thread (How to: Determine whether or not your PSP is hackable) my slim should be hackable as it's date code is 8A

I'm using a 2nd hand UK slim:

BarCode: 03-27401019-0586358-PSP2003
Serial: HB0586358
Date: 8A
Box Letter: F [unknown if original box]
FW version: 5.03

So far I have tried:
- following the first post
- moving slim.tiff to the photo's folder [when I do this I can't even select the file, it freezes right away then turns off 5 seconds later.]
- restoring to defaults
- turning the umd cache off
- turning the umd auto/cache off+changing character style.

Most of the time my PSP turns off [not reset, off] when I select the .tiff file [takes 5+ seconds] though a few times it's done nothing at all [and no, i'm not opening the file wityh x, just scrolling down to it.]
The horrible popping sound it makes when it shuts down is really getting on my nerves, any help would really be appreciated.

keep trying.
you have to do it all in order. let me make it as simple as I could.
1. Plug to USD and copy all the necessary file. Remember H.Bin should be in the root file.
2. charge your psp (do not unplug the charger), remove the memory card and restore to defaults.
3. turn all the UMD option off and change your char to US Latin.
4. Themes should be in original.
5. then go the picture or photo option. insert the memory card. choose camera then go back.
6. choose memory card and wait till triangle shows up
7. then quickly go the chickhen folder, then scroll down till you find the infamous slim.tiff. you will see that the memory will turn to orange blinking.....
8. if the psp restart you are success. if just shut off then you have to repeat it two or three times.
9. If failed then start it again in the next day.
10. Keep me informed if still failed.
Thankyou so much for this.

It didn't work the first time [just shut down] but then I took the card out and repeated steps 5+ and it worked on the second go.

Too bad I didn't have this info before I ordered a pandora and MMS XD, oh well now I have those as backup [plus a new 8gig card and more powerful battery ^_^.]
My board was a TA-088 V1/V2.
