Firmware Installed: 3.90

Exclamation please help me!

hello, i am new to PSP softmodding but have had a lot of experience with modding Xbox. i have a "fat" psp (the old big one, not the new slim), a very early model i think. i have been updated it (before i thought about modding) and i dont know what firmware version i have, and i want to mod it. i have a few questions (btw i read some of the FAQs)

1) how do you check the version of your PSP FirmWare?
2) what version of homebrew firmware should i install (is M33 the best?)
3) how do i install it?? do i have to downgrade or something??
4)will installing a custom FW affect regular UMD games? can i still play them? can i play them online? can i switch between firmwares?

how do i do these things?? please, ive read some things but cant find an answer, and i kind of need a more directed answer.

edit- alright, i found out my FW, its 3.90

Firmware Installed: 371m33-4

Default please help me!

1) In the System Settings there is a menu they named Software Version or something like that. Its not hard to find, just peruse the settings menu.
2) I run 3.71m33-4 because it works damn near perfect with psx games and isnt buggy like the 3.9X releases tend to be.
3) Get back to me with what firmware you are running. If its a really low number madding will be easy, if not then you will have to put a little work into it, but its still not too difficult.
4) You can still play UMDs and play online just fine, CFW doesnt affect any of that. You can switch between firmwares, but there is really no need to.

ok, i updated my 1st post with the FW version. its 3.90

whats a psx game? is it a custom game like psp halo? or like an emulator?

ive looked at darkalex, and you say i should get m33 3.71? is it better than the newer versions?

is a custom firmware overwrite the current dashboard? (like xbox modding) or does it just change something internally to where it will run hombrew?

PSX = Playstation. You can convert playstation games to play them on a psp. More on that later, though.
Alot of bugs have been reported with the newer versions. I use 3.71m33 simply because it works and i have no reason to update. None of the newer firmwares have feature i must have.
After you install the CFW your psp will look and function just like a normal psp except that you can run homebrew/psp isos/all sorts of stuff. You can make it look different by installing themes, but its not like installing Avalaunch where everything is different. Your psp will look the same but you will be able to do anything you want on it.

You could always buy a tool battery.

Or, if you have a friend/know someone with CFW already on their PSP...they could softmod it for you.

Or, there is Lumines and GTA.

But, I would recommend just doing it yourself.
If you can read/follow directions and you have a STEADY hand...you'll do just fine. ^_^
