No matter what I try to burn, no matter what program I use, I get a input/output error. I have no clue what it means. This is what nero's burning rom wrote in the error file. (not the whole thing, its huge, just the part with the error, if you need to see the whole thing tell me and i will but up a download link.)

computer problems got you down? Get a Mac.
I would consider taking this drive back to the store from which you got it, or updating it's firmware and making sure you have the proper drivers installed. If you are using vista, thats the problem hands down.

Not using vista, currently tracking down newest firmware. Just for the books, I hate mac, but I also hate windows, the reason I got the burner was so I could burn and install ubuntu/linux.

I can't get down with the Mac hate. But yes bashing windows is more than welcome in my book. I boot ubuntu on my Mac about once or twice a week, its a nice OS. Linux is good stuff. Funny thing about your problem is that if you installed ubuntu and attached that drive it would probably work. f*cking windows. is this a brand new drive or second hander? If its new take it back, if its second hand burn the live CD by some other means and then attach this drive when install is complete. everything works with linux.

Well, it is new, but I cant take it back. I did find some leads with the firmware thing tho, but I'm not sure, could you take a look at what I found and tell me if it looks ok.

who makes the drive? go to their site and go to the support section. this is the only place you should get FW updates for your drive.

Sony sells them, but Optiarc is the manufacturer. I could not find firmware for it on Sonys site, so I googled [optiarc drive firmware] and got this
    http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php
    that led me to this...

I read on one of the places in my above post...

that the two different types are interchangeable. That is you can use AW-G170A firmware with the AW-Q170A drive.
    What do you think.
