I took apart my psp for the third time yesterday to replace the wifi card since my audio jack was broken. I put everything back together and it booted up fine but when i went to put in a umd, it just makes this sound similar to grinding. If i had to guess, I would say that the worm gear is moving past the range of the laser making the plastic piece that keeps the laser on track with the worm gear skip on top of the gear making the grinding type sound. (worm gear moves laser to read disc) I'm only guessing all this stuff from seeing how a ps2 laser works and having a similar issue

So any ideas what could be causing the laser to be "off". On ps2 it could be due to this disc that adjusts the height of the laser. I realize that I will probably have to get a replacement, but if anyone has any ideas of things to clean or discs to adjust, please tell me. (already tried cleaning laser, but im pretty sure it is something internal)

I think your idea in your first paragraph is the answer you're looking for. if it was something else it'd make a different noise, and quite possibley a more electronic sound if it was something to do with hardware malfunction/falure. Grinding noise sounds like a physical imparement. Like something hitting something else.

Does it ONLY happen when you put in a UMD?

It happens when it tries to read the umd. I dunno, I'll prolly open it up and look at it. Just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas first before I open it.

is there a way to take the case off yet stil have the psp operate? I've never disassebled my PSP so, I wouldn't know. But see if you can troubleshoot the sound while the case is off. That might help things =b
