I was looking to get one for school (writing papers mainly). I found a p4, 512, 40gb with a bunch or programs that would suit my needs. It's a really good price, but I just don't want to spend the money and then it crap out on me after a month. The only thing is that I really need a laptop. I guess because it is on craigslist, I could probably just go to his house and demand a refund, but still.... Any comments?

yeah I'm in the same boat dude, I saw a $4,000 Sony Viao (Blue-ray) on Craigslist for $520 but the catch was it was in the UK the person just posted it on a CALI list... and by god I wanted that thing so bad... but it ended up being a scam the women who was trying to sell it to me gave me this bogus website that would ship the Laptop to me so I can look at it then I can mail her the money, I've never heard of an international Shipping company called TNT, and the last time i bought something from UK I was robbed... and I couldn't do anything about it...

So... if your looking for a laptop I'd say ask about the warrenty... or if its really old, and your just going to use it for school work... then take your shot... just be prepaired to bite the bullet....

laptops are NEVER a good idea to buy used. unlike a desktop, a laptop is mobile and subject to more abuse then a desktop that sits in your house all its life. you never know when the seller is being honest, so i say avoid it at all costs.

the good news is this: if u want a laptop just for school work, then theres plenty of low end systems that you can buy new for under $500. dell offers their Inspiron notebooks starting at $500, HP has their base model coming in at $450, and Acer offers several models for less then $500. Dell is always running ads for their laptops at excellent prices (ive seen their base model for for $399 brand new). shop around and buy new with a warrenty if you can as used laptops have a 50-50 chance of being good or bad

Don't buy a P4 if you'll be using it for school...I made the switch to a centrino thinkpad (T40) a couple months ago, and the 5 hour battery life combined with the 5lb, 1" thick package kicks ass...It's lighter than my books, and I can use it practically dawn to dusk (on and off, of course) without needing a charge.

Buying used is a great idea if you're a techie, it's the only thing I do - I aint paying 2k for a new thinkpad or 400 for a dell POS when a hundred bucks and a little tinkering will get me something decent.

A suggestion for school, though - Go old tech...Not being able to play new games is a good thing when you should be studying anyways. You should be looking for a 1ghz+ pentium M (or a core duo if you can afford it), 512mb ram, ~40gigs, and a non-glossy screen...Glossys are better than mattes outside, but under flourescent lighting mattes blow glossys out of the water.

P4's are the most power intensive cpu's, even the P4-M's used in laptops. If you had equivalently spec'd P4-M and P-M based laptops, the P-M would have nearly double the battery life. Alongside the processor, P4 models tend to be desktop replacement models, meaning higher end components requiring still more power, along with generally being larger and much heavier than other models.

Out of curiosity, what's the manufacturer and model number? I could give you a better recommendation if I knew exactly what you were intending to buy. $200 aint a bad deal, buy you could do better if you ebayed one and fixed it up.

well I know that it is an asus ls l5g. I've heard of the brand, but not the model. also, I will be using it as a desktop replacement so I dont really care about it needing to be plugged into the charger most of the time.

I found the dell inspiron 1000 look attractive and have pretty nice specs. how much is the RAM upgradeable to? I want to be able to do school work and play sims 2. could either laptops that i've found work for those 2 things?

Thought that sounded familiar...My buddy has that exact laptop - Epitome of the Dell POS.

Dell Inspiron 1000 Specs. Laptops Specifications.

Decent specs, but fat, flimsy, and it's only got one ram socket...512 stock, but you'll have to switch out that stick to put a bigger one in...Dunno if itll run your games, don't have the system req's on hand.

Asus is a pretty big name. They sell good gaming computers. you can google them or whatever. I just can't find the model asus that I may buy. If someone knows anything about the asus ls l5g let me know becuase I don't want to make a mistake.

that sucks that the website was real because if you had known then, it would have been a pretty sick deal.
