that sounds good for what you need. the only problem you got with that set-up is vista.

Yeah i heard that Vista has a lot of bugs and sucks, but then others say it runs just fine and that the other people just do not have enough RAM (Since Vista is a memory Hog).

Would I be better off getting XP instead?

if you do get vista, INSTALL SP1 ASAP

it's supposed to make it run faster and actually clear up some hard drive space and ram space

i think vista is getting a worse name than it actually sucks for. i just got a laptop with vista, and provided you turn off all the crap (side bar) it's not that bad. i can record my guitar directly into my laptop with no signal delay, 37 tracks and counting.

it has it's issues but the truth is, with the setup that guy listed, he'll be updating his o.s. before his laptop becomes obsolete.

<disclaimer> i don't pc game so i know nothing about vista's gaming capabilities.

vista runs fine on 768mb of pc133 ram. So its obviously not a memory hog. I think people dont know how to tweak their OS for max performance.
Idk about SP1 though. I installed it but i havent really tried it out too much yet.

you shouldn't have to tweak an OS that is sold on a computer to work on that computer...

I had nothing but bad times with vista, and had to downgrade. Luckily I have plenty of CD keys because they threw some computers out at work

Every OS needs tweaking to make it run optimally. Hell, even osx on its own hardware can/should be tweaked to run a whole lot faster. I spent maybe 20 minutes tweaking vista to run on a machine that should, in theory, run vista very very slowly. If someone applied the same tweaks to a half decent computer the performance gains would be incredible.

-get rid of any language you dont speak (japanese/chinese and korean can tkae up almost 500mb).
-Turn of a ton of services such as Remote Access and Fax
-Get rid of all the drivers you dont need such as Fax and modem drivers
    -ditch the sidebar
-remove the tabletPC files (unless you are on a tablet pc, of course)

I have vista installed + SP1 and it takes up 5.3gb on my hdd. Granted, there are no progams in there, but a virgin vista install takes up well over 8gb after sp1.

if youre buying from the dell outlet, do realize that buying the base pc, then upgrading easy components such as memory/hdd/video cards will save you gobs of cash.
If you have the money to throw into it, go for it. I would take some time into looking at what you can get things for before you hop into such a powerful premanu'd laptop
    and yes, install xp!

and vista is a memory hog. I had my last 'download' system tweaked to the gill (7 necessary programs running) and i would just watch the 1gb get maxed.
I couldnt shut off anything else without a crash.
