Windows XP has been pissing me off for a while now. "Please activate your software", "Windows has detected malicious software: 'MapleStory.exe'." Stuff like that.

I recently heard about Linux. What exactly is Linux? I know its an OS but that's about it. The web site's information is way too broad to make sense to me.

    Anyone?

Linux is a modular OS (You modify it the way you want)

The main versions (distro's) of linux are:

    Ubuntu
    openSuse
    Mandriva
    RedHat
    Fedora
    Mint
    Debian
    DreamLinux
    etc....

IMO Linux (especially Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron) is one of the best operating systems ever. and Most linux OS's are free under the GNU Public license.

Linux can have one of the best UI's ive seen.
If you install a Linux OS you can choose from a KDE or Gnome UI environment.
And Programs are easy to install using the terminal.

Ive been using linux for about 7 months now and i rarely use windows now.

You should switch, its for the better.

depends. dont think you can just carry your PC games over to linux. alot can run, alot can, but to answer your question, ill use an example:

windows xp runs evenly on 512mb, while ubuntu (a distribution of linux) can survive on 256mb. so yea thats a big difference.

I know CoD4 can be played on Linux fine. Currently, on my XP it's runnin at roughly 52 FPS/second. I want to raise it to 60~70 FPS with Linux. Is that possible?

Well... If you don't know much of computers i suggest not to start messing with Linux. I agree with Andromed. It is good, but you usually can't put windows stuff on it without messing with command line. BUT if u usually use computer for gaming, Like PC games.. Well it is very, VERY hard to put 'em on, and for beginners IT IS IMPOSSIBLE!!!.
If u use it for every day stuff. Like reading news from internet and stuff. It is great. I don't know about u. If you are a hardcore computer man, U should Learn more about Linux and try it out. But if U are a usual computer user and don't know any Hardcore computer men, I suggest to reinstall windows.
Sorry abot my creepy and confusing post.

FPS WILL be slower on linux. To run most games you need to emulate windows with with Wine.

If you want to try it out, grab Ubuntu. You can install it from windows now.

If i were you id use somethng called Wubi-8.04. Link below \/

It allows you to install linux just like an program in windows. And Linux can be uninstalled really easily.

Also if you use Wubi you dont have to use/or mess with the Lilo bootloader.

Link: Wubi - Ubuntu Installer for Windows

Also visit Ubuntu Forums for tips/support etc....
