I keep seeing things about RAID, and I did some searching on my own, and basically what I understood is that it is a system of combining two or more hard drives in various ways. Is this right? If so, what is the benefit? I saw something about increased performance. I have a laptop with 2 hard drives (both 5400 rpm, one is 160 gb, other is 500 gb, and one boots to vista, and the other to windows 7). Will I be able to use RAID?

There are different forms of RAID. The most useless is RAID 0, which spreads out data across two or more hard drives. I say it's useless because if one hard drive fails, the other is of no use. The most practical forms of RAID just mirror the hard drives so that one is an exact copy of the other. It doesn't affect performance negatively at all, since the hard drives are doing the work at the same time, not one after the other. In some cases, it actually speeds things up a bit. RAID needs to be supported by the motherboard, and is by most nowadays. You can emulate RAID with software but true RAID is done by the motherboard via Windows drivers (other OS's do RAID too). You should really use two hard drives of the same size since if one is smaller than the other, it will fail (one will be filled, the other will not). I'm pretty sure you need to install RAID drivers while installing Windows, not afterwards.

All right thanks for the reply. So basically, there is no point in trying because my hard drives are different sizes.

Pretty much. Also you need to install the RAID driver during the Windows installation.
