I picked up the original star wars trilogy the other day for only $3 a steal complete steal. So I got to thinking if you're allowed to make one back up copy can't you back up your vhs collection into dvds.

So how would I go about doing this? Is there some type of video capture program I can use after I hook up my vcr to my computer? Whats the best way to burn the dvds so they just play in the player like a tape without having to deal with any menus?

    Are you serious?
Do you understand the point of DIGITAL media vs ANALOG media?

Would you hook a turntable up to your pc just to backup an LP record to a mp3?

Save the extra $30 and buy it on DVD.

I was thinking of getting a tv tuner capture card so I could also record my favorite tv shows.

You like to reinvent wheels don't ya. DVR's do a terrific job of recording your favorite TV shows.

Well I plan on doing this to all my vhs tapes. Its a cheap way to get dvds if I can buy great classic movies on vhs for only $1 each.

just buy a camera that saves video onto a ms/sd card, and record the vhs playin on the tv.
then just put the video files on your pc.

    just FYI...

VHS is Analog media, which is inherently noisy and poor quality. The audio/video are usually on the same channel/track.

DVD is Digital media and capable of so much more when it comes to Audio/Video quality, seperation of the A/V channels, Multiple Audio Channels, etc...

When you capture/record the VHS you are simply recording a shitty source and will not see anything different just because it is now on DVD or your computer.
Not to mention that you are buying old ass VHS tapes that have been played over and over again, thus the quality of the shitty VHS has been degraded ever more. So you will end up with a really shitty sounding and shitty looking rendition of whatever classic movie you want.

If you were to buy that classic movie on DVD at least it was processed from a higher quality original recording from the studio where they have much much better equipment to digitize the analog media.

Now if you have some old home videos that you would like to save then this is a very smart solution, but really if it is movies you want, buy the DVD. It isn't that much more.

But like I said, this is just FYI

You're gonna have a nice, shiny dog-turd at the end of your process. Might as well buy the DVDs used off of someone or rent them and rip them...

just as there are some people who prefer the sound of LPs (which btw you can turn into mp3s) some people like the muddy quality of VHS tapes. i'm one of them. there's something comforting about movies we liked as kids looking the way they do. digital may be clear and nice and what-not, but it's the same as people liking big metal cars as opposed to the plastic shiny ones we have now.

well, ya. but i mean, you watch original quality the way it was meant to be watched. and watch digital movies the way it was meant to be watched.
