A friend asked me if they could prevent their kid from texting on her iPod touch?

First off, i didn't know you could text from a touch, apparently there is a free sms text app for the touch that allows you to text via your wifi connection.

So does anyone know if there is a way to stop/prevent/lock down this app other than deleting it or disconnecting from the wifi?

There are a lot of apps that use this. I actually used on on my iPhone for a while. If the iTouch is jailbroken, I would suggest Lockdown, which is a Cydia app that lets you lock individual apps with a numeric passcode. There's also a built-in restriction menu in the iPhone/iTouch settings that can password-protect the installation of apps and other things.

Like I said, the iPhone/iTouch have built-in restriction settings. In the settings menu, go to Settings -> General -> Restrictions -> Enable Restrictions. Then, he can disallow installing apps and whatever else he wants, enforcing it with a password. Scrolling down, he can also restrict certain kinds of app as well.

Tell them to beat the kid with a belt until he / she does as they say.
