I just downloaded Ubuntu today and tried to run it from the CD, but I got this stupid error over and over again with different numbers each time. I can't get into the OS.

[#######.######] Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block #####

The #'s are different numbers every time.

I know only a couple members are Linux users, but it can't hurt to ask.
What the hell is going on here?

Well this is a pretty common boot problem in Ubuntu.

The System probably mistook the CD as something else..That is the same problem I got when I used a Cd but I don't know if its entirely the same as it is for you as it was for me.

But try to run it from something else then the CD a couple of times and see if that works.

And if it doesn't then I don't know what to say then Download it again and try again..start over.

Yeah fyrewolf. Actually, the first thing I did was check google, but I couldn't get a clear answer. Some people got the error in completely different situations, which doesn't help me much.

I checked the md5 checksums and they matched, so there's no error in the download.

How do I run it from something else? I can't get the CD to install it anywhere because it gives me those stupid buffer I/O errors.

Well I thought you would be able to boot it somewhere before CD or anywhere else..

Where is the file itself located at in your computer?

Well, it's currently in the recycle bin cause I burned the ISO to a LiveCD, but I haven't cleaned the recycle bin yet.

Gamefaqs topic I made. I might try the network install, but I'm not sure yet.
BTW Zayne, I'm not really sure what you mean. What do you want me to do with the ISO?

Well... I was able to get Knoppix 3.4 to boot with the noscsi boot option, though it won't detect my network card and starts in 800x600 resolution.
Still... I want to try Ubuntu cause I've heard so many good things about it.

I had a problem LIKE this but not exactly like this so I thought what I said would be the same thing to do.

But I run Ubuntu and Red Hat linux Kernals on my iMac's and Macbook and they are fucking sweet.

Oh okay... well I have been confused by the idea of a net install by someone on Gamefaqs. He says he had the same problem I have and that a net install solved it. But the problem is that I don't know how to do a net install... even FAQs about it are confusing me!

    What FAQs, you may ask?

I'm just afraid I'll download the whole thing and find out that it was pointless. :(

Well, I used the disc I ordered for free and it gets past that point just fine. I don't know why I was having trouble with the ones I burned on my own.
I have a new problem now though...
