You can block many ads, pop-ups, spyware, viruses, trojans, malware, websites, etc...This is basically an added layer of security for your operating system. It's a pretty neat trick and I have used it for many years. Some people use firefox's addon called adblock plus, but I prefer to use this method instead. Here we go:

You can use either windows or linux. You can download a list of host entries from here:
Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File

    In windows:

    1. copy the hosts file into your c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
NOTE: make a backup of your original hosts file in case of anything goes wrong.

    2. make it "read-only" so no other applications or programs can change the contents of your hosts file.

    3. Restart browser.

    In linux:

    1. Put hosts file in /etc

    2. change the permissions back to the original. I believe it's tied to root (rw,r,r)

    2. Restart browser.

NOTE: This may cause some issues with some websites.

Yea you can use that too. I heard it slows down firefox, not sure if it's true tho...I remembered I used it in the past, but it didn't do a good job compared to the other alternative. Anyway, it helps a whole lot and in combination with NoScript.

I use AdBlocker+ and I don't know how I ever used the internet without it.

Either way, he posted something more useful than someone else in his position; with 9 posts. I'm sure someone will find it useful.
