Sounds like you need to Clone your MAC address of the ethernet card thats in the PC that was accessing the internet before you installed the router.

This will be the pc that was connected to your cable/DSL modem.

when your on this pc goto the START button then goto RUN, then type in CMD hit <ENTER> this will bring you to a DOS window, then type in IPCONFIG/ALL <ENTER> you will see what the MAC address is of the NIC, write this down, then got your router 192.168.1.1, the first page, which is SETUP, you will see a option "MAC ADDRESS CLONE" its pretty self explanatory from there.

If that doesnt work let me know.

that is of course assuming that he has the modem plugged into the wireless router. Sounds to me like he doesn't. He could also have dhcp running on both and/or both the router and modem's ip address could be the same. The way I set mine up is disable dhcp on the wireless router, and instead of using the wan port, plug the modem into the 4/5 port switch on the back, that way anyone who connects is assigned an IP address from the modem. also, make sure the modem and router have different ip addresses. Check the simple solutions first, then if those don't work, do the mac cloning as t-zone suggested.
