BIG issue

what do i need to play online, and how much does it cost? i dont know if i should get a wireless adaptor, or a wireless router.

I plan on using the one that needs an access point(think its infastructre mode)

either you get an wireless router or just an access point, linksys is quite popular if im not wrong

or you can just go around in your town trying to find non-encrypted hot-spots

Just like how JSH said buy a wireless router or access point they range from 25 dollars and up depending on the speed, range, and popularity. You will want to look for a wireless B or wireless G made by Linksys, D-link, Netgear, and Belkin. These for are the cheapest out there. You must remember that you must have high-speed online capabilities for you to have wireless connectivity. When setting up the router choose non-encrypted. If all of this sounds expensive or difficult go to a Starbucks or Barnes and Noble for example to update (which is not recommended right now), play online, or browse
